    Planar PL191M, no backlight

Hey folks. I have a Planar PL191M here that has no backlight. I've verified with a bright flashlight that the display *does* work - the CCFLs just fail to light.

Upon opening the case of this display, I found three boards - video, usb, and power/audio. On the power/audio board, there's a single vented cap (Elite 16V 330μF EB(M)), and what appears to be a blown fuse (a similar fuse on the same board appears to be intact).

Are these enough to cause the CCFLs to stay dark?

A list of caps found on the three boards of this monitor (all of them are Elite, except for two cans labeled '000 LFE 2500001'):

    Power/Audio:
    5x 16V 330μF EB(M)
    2x 50V 10μF PS(M)
    3x 50V 1μF PS(M)
    1x 50V 3.3μF PS(M)

    USB:
    2x 16V 470μF SM(M)
    2x 25V 100μF SM(M)

    Video:
    9x 16V 10μF SM(M)
    8x 25V 47μF SM(M)

Should all of these caps be considered suspect? Should I only replace the 5x 16V 330μF EB(M)? Or should I only replace the one obviously failed cap?

    Thanks!

Yes, a single bad cap can cause the ccfl to not lightup especially if that cap is on the inverter board. The same for a blown fuse. A good fuse should measure less than 1.0 Ohm on your multimeter.

I recommend replacing ALL the electroytic caps that you listed for the power board. They all play an important part in the SMPS process and undergo a lot of stress.

The USB/main board caps undergo less stress and probably can be left alone.

I'm not sure what those LFE cans are (see the last attached pic to my original post). Those are located on the power board as well. Should these be replaced?

Any recommendations for the replacement caps? Should I stick with Elite, or go with something else?

If that is LAE and the pcb designation begins with the letter "L", that is an inductor. Caps begin with the letter "C" on the pcb board.

Members here like Panasonic FR, FM, and FC (in that order of preference). Rubycon MCZ and/or Nichicon will also work. See

        https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2280

PS. I have seen a lot of Elite caps used on Benq boards inside Benq and Dell monitors. They are not as bad as Fuhjyuu or Capxon, but nowhere nearly as good as the above mentioned.

Whoops, LAE - you're right. The PCB designations are L1 and L2, so I guess they're inductors. Thanks!

I haven't been able to locate a datasheet for these. Starting with the 16V 330μF EB caps, would http://search.digikey.com/us/en/prod...1285-ND/589026 (Nichicon VZ) be an adequate replacement? What replacements would be recommended for the other caps on that board?

            Thanks again.

I did. I do see recommended series for various manufacturers.

I decided to try searching DigiKey for the recommended Nichicon series, and then narrowed my search down further by searching for the 16V 330uF caps I definitely need to replace. The search returned caps in most of the listed series, with only the PW and HE being carried in stock. I've noticed that of the two that are in stock, operating temp/lifetime, ripple current, and impedance differ. As I mentioned in my previous post, I don't have the data sheet for these Elites, so I'm unable to be certain as to which cap to use to replace the failed Elite caps.

The specs for the two in-stock caps from Digikey:
                http://search.digikey.com/us/en/prod...1784-ND/589525 - 3000 Hrs @ 105°C / -55°C ~ 105°C - 555mA ripple - 117 mOhm impedance
                http://search.digikey.com/us/en/prod...1521-ND/589262 - 7000 Hrs @ 105°C / -40°C ~ 105°C - 640mA ripple - 130 mOhm impedance

Would either of these work or should I go with a specific cap?

If you can't find them, then I would just go with Panasonic FM/FC (check the diameter and height)

Thanks again! I'll compare the size, but they look like they should work otherwise.
