    ViewSonic V2000s display issues

Howdy, got a referral from MacNN.

I got a ViewSonic V2000s for $10 at a computer recycler, plus $30 for a stand. It works 90% of the time just fine, but every now and then it looks like it's stuck in 256 colors regardless of the color depth. It flickers a little bit, too, when it's doing that. I've tested it on different computers when it's doing that, so I know it's the monitor.

Any ideas? I may crack it open and fiddle with it, but I'd like to know where to start.

Smacking it doesn't seem to change anything, so I don't think it's a loose connection.

Open it and look for potentially bad capacitors. If you require help, please post pictures as per misc suggestion #1 at

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

No pictures yet, I dont have a camera. But I took the board out and it had some brown residue along the edges causing a little bit of rust. I'm going to use a soft toothbrush to try and clean it, then let it dry.

It looks like one of the small surface mount canisters may have leaked.

The other thing that worries me is that it rattles. I haven't figured out where, but I think it coming from one of the capacitors. It's weird.

I'm absolutely horrible at soldering and I could never do surface mount if my life depended on it. I'm hoping a good scrubbing will fix it.

Well, this turned out to be a long project, mostly because of work... which is a good thing in this economy.

I replaced as many caps as as I could, plus I went ahead and replaced the crystal oscillator. Cost me about $4 in parts at my local surplus electronics store.

So far so good, and the picture looks clear. With my horrendous soldering skills, I'm just happy it turned back on and has a picture. I bought a little bit of solder paste, and that stuff has been unbelievably helpful. My hands shake pretty bad, so trying to keep the solder steady along with the iron was almost impossible. Now I just put some goop down, lay a capacitor on the pads, then just touch it with the iron. It's awesome stuff.

Off to stress test it. *cross fingers*

I never did figure out what was rattling on that board. It still rattles. Oh well.
