Re: ACER AL2423W Monitor - Dead Inverter

Ok, I have the monitor torn down to the panel. Surprisingly, it is a Samsung LTM240M2, which is an S-PVA screen. Odd, because I looked up the specs for the AL2423W and it shows it to have an AUO M24OUW01 panel, which is a P-MVA screen. It looks like I ended up with a very nice panel, but the problem is that I cannot seem to get it open. It has a metal bezel around the outside that's held on by metal tabs. I popped these tabs, but it does not want to come off, so I suspect it is being held in place by some sort of adhesive. I don't want to be too forceful and risk damaging the screen. Anyone had experience with this panel or similar type before?

Sorry about the flash in the pics, but it's nighttime so I really had no choice.

4 or 6 screws on vertical sides? Keep working around the panel gently prying up on the inside backplate. It is probably just stuck from factory assembly. No, they don't use an adhesive.

Well, I've killed it. I got the bezel off and was in the process of opening the panel when the screwdriver I was using to pop the taps slipped and tore off one of the flexible PCB cables. The worst that could happen did happen. Nothing more than than a $600 heap of garbage now.

I guess I can sell it for spare parts, but that's about it. FML.

          Ugh! That's rotten luck.

Keep an eye on Craigslist or Ebay for a dead one. If nothing else, the tubes could bring some bucks as used. New ones are $18 a piece. Boards, bezel, housing, stand, etc. Sell them on Ebay as separate units. Brings more bucks than a "broken monitor".

            I found a replacement if I can't get a new panel: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824116421

Seems a pretty good deal. Slightly less resolution (1080 vs 1200), but it's an IPS panel.

Although S-PVA does offer better blacks, so I'm kinda torn between the two.

Well, not such a bad ending after all. I got the Viewsonic VP2365wb for $289. Looks better than the screen it replaced. Normally IPS displays are going to run for double or more, but this one is cost-competitive with most similarly sized TN (garbage) panels out there. Haven't noticed any ghosting either. Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a good widescreen panel, especially one that has good color accuracy for tasks like photo editing.

Ok, another update. I finally got around to opening the panel up (propping the tabs open with paperclips - should have thought about that before). Tested the CCFLs and they all strike, lighting about halfway down the tube before the inverter cuts out. So, I assume all the lamps are good then? And the inverter is toast? Just gotta figure out what is good and what isn't. Might sell the parts or find a replacement panel and drop that in for a spare monitor or sell it and recoup some of my loses.

How to force Acer Aspire Series to bootup BIOS/UEFI on external Monitor?
                  by maralexbar
I ask this question in general as there are many Acer Aspire models with UEFI Insyde BIOS that do not boot to the BIOS on an external monitor (VGA, HDMI, etc) showing only the Internal LCD (LVDS, eDP etc).
It's a pain to work on Acer notebooks with a broken screen and not being able to access the BIOS using an external monitor.

If anyone knows how to force the external monitor as primary for Notebooks of those models
