    Mystery audio device (educational)

Just wondering if any of you could help me identify an old audio player that I used in school back in the 1980s. I do not remember the make or model of it. All I remember is that the medium was a sheet of A4 paper that had a magnetic backing. After inserting the paper, lining the holes up with the pins to make sure it's in the right place, the lid was closed and a playback head started revolving underneath the paper. The head gradually moved in from the edge, tracing a spiral track.

So it was like a record player, but using magnetic recording technology where the head moved instead of the medium. If I remember correctly you couldn't record on it; you had to purchase pre-recorded sheets for use with it. The idea I assume was to be more robust than a cassette player or record, but it never seemed to catch on - perhaps it was too expensive to manufacture the recordings.
You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

u.k. schools had a lot of expensive junk forced on them by corrupt officials in the 80's.

    i remember some of it.
like the RM-Nimbus computers - followed by the BBC-B computers.
and tape decks in giant wood cases - 10times the price of a tape deck in the high-street.

it was something about having to buy British made equipment.

Sensor on Aurora AS1018CD paper shredder doesn't work
      by CapSnap123
I'm getting frustrated troubleshooting a paper shredder. The way the shredder normally works is when you turn the power on, nothing happens until you insert a piece of paper. There is an IR shredder in the shredder and inserting the paper breaks the beam and starts the shredder motor. But now the motor runs constantly, even when no paper is inserted. I've replaced the photodiode and the IR emitter. Also the relay makes a nice clicking sound so I assume it is working too. I don't know what else to check. Here's a photo of the circuit board. The red and black wires marked IR - go to the...

LG BH6420P Home theather blue ray player repair
      by unimatrix93
Hello everyone, I'm trying to troubleshoot this LG hometheater player.

The customer forced her USB drive reversed into it's USB socket and since then the player won't work properly, only shows "Please wait" error forever on it's display.

Now I started diagnosing the USB socket and the mainboard where it's connected.

I found 20ohm resistance to ground on the 5V line of the USB.

5V is missing and I found the buck converter of the USB line, TPS65252 IC.
After measuring the pins I realized that both VIN and 3V3 is correctly present...

What are these components that detect paper in a fax scanner
      by waigy
      PROBLEM SOLVED
I DIDN'T REALISE MY SMALLEST SOLDERING TIP COULD JUST FIT BETWEEN THESE COMPONENTS.
I MANAGED TO REMOVE THEM WITH NO DAMAGE TO THE BOARD AND I HAVE MY INTENDED END RESULT.

On a Possio PM70 portable fax machine which has a scanner that detects when you push a piece of paper into the scanner slot.
It is these two small (3mm long) components that detect the paper and start the scanner feed motor which pulls the paper into the scanner.
(These are on the circuit board for the keypad and not the main board)

I want to disable these as...
