How should i get started on circuit design

well, i want to design microcontroller boards and etc. and eventually step up to microprocessor board design... i might be biting off a bit more than i can chew but i dont know at this point, can anyone suggest a good way to get into this kind of stuff?

Play with an arduino, or play with a microcontroller on a breadboard, etc...

Learn about how they work, and the types of communication used (I.E. 'I2C', 'SPI', etc..)

Learn about the layout of circuit boards too, and andlearn to avoid ground-loops.
You can go even simpler by doing a circuit like an LM555 timer, or an LM317 adjustable voltage regulator.

I really need to know about what you already know/understand, to be able to give you good sugguestions.
