    Laptop motherboards

    Hi

First of all, I'm a bit green on this, so I'm sorry if this is weird or can't be done.

I use to have some laptops wich don't power on. I can check for fuses and see if something's burned and that's it.

I need/want to know (if possible) what are the major components that can break down and cause this kind of behavior so I can test them and replace them.

Or were can I see/read/learn about this.

I don't know if I made myself clear about this.....

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Amazinguk

      Thanks for your hints.

But that I already know. What I want to learn is more at component level on the MB.

      Thanks

you would have to know some serious electronics for something like that. We're talking HUGE schematics troubleshooting knowhow, and expensive tools.

I'm not saying it can't be done. but, it requires years of experience usually

just like uranium says. remember: most of traffic accidents happens when the driver was drunk or he didn't know to drive.

Most usual problem is with BGA either on northrbridge or dedicated GPU.

                    Re: Laptop motherboards

It can be anything on a laptop, we can't tell you what to check as you must check everything. Basically you might start by confirming the power supply works and trace the circuit with a multimeter.

Power adapter, DC input jack and it's traces on the PCB (solder joints), onboard power supply mosfets, entire mainboard solder joints and hairline cracks, any parts getting excessively hot, most common failure modes for the specific make and model of laptop (search engine research), hints of failure mode based on past history of an incident like dropping it or spilling liquid or having fan failure or dust buildup, etc.

Odds are it is not worth the time. The typical used laptop is worth less than $200, and someone with the skills to do repairs that aren't obvious is worth over $60 an hour plus the equipment, repair tools, cost of components. Better to just part it out and sell viable parts on an auction site like eBay, OR seek more of the same model laptop and mix and match parts to get one working out of more than one that failed.
