Tektronix MDO4000 series: Made in China

A picture in the November 2011 issue of Silicon Chip shows the back of a Tektronix MDO4000 series, which was clear enough to show "Made in China".
The price at the time of printing was AU$23,205 (base model) and AU$33,180 (top rated model).

Hopefully, the electrolytics are of good quality (I saw Nichicon and Chemi-Con units in a piece of Tektronix equipment from the mid-90s)... and I wish I can open one up to see what's inside too.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I forgot to say about the warranty - hopefully it is a very long one.

It's a shame to see such an expensive instrument made in China...

TEK FLUKE & keithley are under the corporate control of Danaher.
The production of our modern electronics is made by automated production lines = robots.
The profits of this business are distributed to few wealthy hands which called as share holders.

While a lot of modern production is done by robots, you would be wrong to say ALL of it is. That is not true. A human is far better at putting knobs on the front of the case, installing PCB inside the unit, connecting wires, etc. Building a robot to do that would be incredibly difficult.

You mentioned tasks performed by humans which does not require any spesialization aka educational preparation = electrical / electronics theory.
This is how the modern industry can use even farmers so to assemply electronics.

Except understanding electronics is necessary for repairing them on the factory floor, and for understanding why doing "X" may be bad and why doing "Y" is necessary. Otherwise, workers will cut corners to hit production targets.

But you're right, overall, it is pretty unspecialised, and anyone can do it with a little education. Now, they are also moving some engineering business over. Agilent now design a lot of stuff in Malaysia.

Some suspicious toughs here... The production, moved (or was extended), first, to some countries, but produced goods (mostly or even all) ended in third countries, or in country of production, (not in the country of mother-company)... As this trend increased (winning new markets), it's a normal step to move other parts of company in this countries (it has nothing to do with cheap labor, it's only "volume", so called sold quantity)... Looking forward (in years), hi-tech goods will be produced only in this countries, or will fully break apart, and will revive in another...

Scopes are "hot stuff", especially today, wrong presumption that majority of (broken :-) goods have "easy to PROPER fix" solution (scope does not help (much), service manual helps, parts list helps ( interchangeable parts), description of failure mode helps, and to some degree experience )...

I do remember some family TV shows, scope was tool in garage for hunting aliens :-))

In Greece we use scopes for hunting much more than innocent aliens.
