    Soundcard as RCL meter

    Hmmm... interesting.

    http://www.elektor.com/magazines/200...0.495109.lynkx

Elektor have a 'circuit' and software that allows you to make a very cheap RCL meter using the sound card in your PC.

If you register for the free weekly email/newsletter you get 10 credits and can download the PDF of the article.

I'm just wondering if you could use the same basic idea for a ESR meter?

i don't think sound card can output 100 or at least 50khz needed to do esr test.
but with external oscillator and mod to the software it could probably be done...
and the sound card that can do 96khz sampling, i guess(so the top testing freq. can be 48khz in the end..or perhaps some freq. divider could be used)......

rcl meter is boring, knowing the r can be done with any meter, c alone cannot confirm cap is ok(it can have ok capacitance but too high esr, and that is more important to measure) and coils rarely go bad...

somebody should tell them that such esr meter would be much more usefull...
