Samsung LE32A457 - Tab bond caught fire

Turned out to be a defective tab driver. The IC on it was actually burning, smoke and all! I had hoped it could be a T-con issue, but no such luck. Luckily I only had £30 in this, so I'll just sell it for parts.

The other ICs appeared to be working, but they too were getting very hot. So more than likely thermal failure killed this one. The tabs were mounted at the bottom on the panel on this model, but doing that doesn't seem to improve the temperature, they still run far too hot. The defective tab was second from left of picture.

So, avoid TVs like this! It uses a Samsung panel.

It amazed me how hot those IC were running, 150~170F, it can't be good for them. Why can't they make them run cooler? I know they are trying to use the frame as the heatsink but that is not good enough.

There's also very few of them. Just 6 for the 1368x768 panel. And this panel doesn't use the side bondings any more. It's all driven from the top; I have no idea how they control the vertical lines?

The particular failed tab was painful to touch, burning hot, but the others were also very hot, they may have also been failed but no obvious signs of being so.

I could not put my fingers on them for more than 5 seconds in the SONY and the SAMSUNG I worked on.

Re: Samsung LE32A457 - Tab bond caught fire

Seems other LCD manufacturers such as LG Philips don't have this issue. I wonder if they've just designed them to be more reliable and cooler running.

Wow, talk about cheapness. That tab bond ribbon cable could have easily burned (I find they are quite flammable most of the time ).

            170F is 76.6667 degrees celcius.

At once point I heard the T-con whining from the strain of running the panel with a bad tab lik that. Also after 10 minutes the screen blanked. Presumably, the T-con output shut down after some time, perhaps got too hot.
