M2N-VM DVI shuts off after 3-4 seconds

    Hi guys,

I'm testing this mobo with the CPU, one stick of RAM and a known good PSU. When you turn it on, it'll stay on for 3-4 seconds but it doesn't beep or output anything to the screen, then it simply shuts off. I suspected bad caps (KZG series) so I replaced all of 1500uF 6.3V and most of 820uF 6.3V.

I marked on the photo the caps that weren't replaced. I reckon they're not essential and the board should POST.

    What else I tried:
    - resetting the CMOS
    - another CPU
    - another PSU

If you start it without the CPU, it stays on but it doesn't beep.

Am I flogging a dead horse here?

    Cheers,
    Bojan

The caps near the PCI and PCIe slots might be critical caps, but the other ones are USB filter caps and shouldn't prevent the system from turning on.

My guess is the northbridge is kaput.

Did you try alternating the RAM between different memory slots?

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

I'm running the board without PCI/PCI-e cards so it shouldn't really matter.. I could be wrong tho.

I tried with different memory modules and slots, also no memory. It's always the same.

Looks like the northbridge and southbridge are integrated into one IC.

Check VRM MOSFETs for shorts. Check IGP MOSFETs for shorts.

        Re-program the socketed BIOS chip.

I tried reprogramming the BIOS and it didn't do anything. I'm tossin the board. Thank for the input.

Yup. The fault probably is the chipset. nVidia chipsets from that era all have known manufacturing defects.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

Don't worry, I removed all of my caps as well as the battery, chipset cooler, BIOS chip and jumpers before tossing the board :-)
