    password backdoors?

Am going to install Ubuntu 5,04 (Hoary Hedgehog) on 2x HP BrioPC with mendocino 433 and PhoenixBIOS and 2x whitebox system with tualeron 1700 (?) and AwardBIOS. Does anyone know of any password backdoors for the BIOSes as they are all p/w protected and none of them have CD as first boot device.

    Re: password backdoors?

You have to clear the CMOS (or password - brand machines usually have separate jumper for that).

So I can unplug the machines, remove cmos battery and leave to sit over weekend.

Pull the battery out for a couple hours, that will discharge it, and erase any passwords. Of course you'll have to reset all the BIOS parameters also.

Did that on one whitebox (asus p4b533 so Willamette Celeron) and now boots up without a p/w.

ubuntu 5.04 installed perfectly on the p4b533-vm. the Brio must have a capacitor backup for the memory as it still prompted a password after battery being disconnected overnight.

Get a manual and use "clear password" jumper or DIP switch.

Will try to get manual for Trigem Cognac board as that's what is in the Brio PCs.

Try the clear CMOS jumper - the usage is described here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bph07169 (you need to turn the power on with the jumper in the "clear" position).

Hello everyone, I come here to tell you my problem regarding the power-on password. It is not a bios reset demand, and i can't have any access to windows. This is the bios and power-on password that is blocking all other things.

My Omen 15-dh0052nf purchased second-hand was configured with the bios password upon purchase (very simple password :P ).

Having decided to sell it in order to get something more powerful, I reset all BIOS settings and set a blank administrator password. But the power-on password cannot be changed to a blank one so I let the actual password set....
