    Compaq missing driver

First a few specs...Its a Compaq Presario SR1720NX, product number EL435AA, Asus A8AE-LE mobo, 3500+ Simpron, 160Gig HD, ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Graphics, some sort of card reader.
It had a hundred gigs of downloaded games on it so I ran a system restore from the backup partition to start out fresh. Didn't work! The restore picked up most everything on the hard drive and put it in the new copy of Xp home. It still had a hundred gigs of junk on it. I figured I'd delete the windows partition using my Dell Xp Home disc. This did work but I deleted the wrong partition! WTF! Next I deleted all the partitions and reinstalled xp from my Dell disc and then used the COA on the Compaq case to activate windows. Now I downloaded all the need drivers from Compaq. I only have one yellow question mark. Its on something called a SM BUS CONTROLLER. I don't even know what the hell this thing is...I've tried some more drivers from compaq as well as a few work arounds I found online. Nothing seems to fix this issue. Somebody here knows what I need to do to fix this. I want to give it to my wife for mothers day. Its not new but its better than the old P3 DELL she is on now.

OK Thanks! I downloaded the original version of the driver for the video. I'll go back and get the newest one and see if that fixes it.

No luck yet...But I do like this PC! Its mhz's says its slower than my Dell...Yeah Right! This Compaq is smoking. If it were a Race engine I'd say it had alot of torque. Its been along time since I've praticed the black arts of AMD. Now I can see that if AMD wanted to compete with the likes of Intel and others, they did had to have chips that were at least in the ball game.
Now that I'm not so tired and burned out from a long road trip I'll do a more detailed search for this ati sm bus controller thing.... Do you all think that this ati smbus driver would be on any of the driver cd's that I have for other ATI RADION products???? Is this smbus something that is a real part on my mobo or is it something that exists in software for some other part???

          Re: Compaq missing driver

Far Out! Its fixed! Thanks NxB! Now I have to dump some of these ATI drivers and ATI BS software I've installed. The thing it needed was and ATI South Bridge driver thing of some sort. Is there a package of mobo drivers that I need for this PC? The driver that fixed this Compaq came from Dell and is numbered R134873. This thing is going to make it to her desk by mothers day now. Next I'm going to look into is this card reader thing. It may be unable to read an SD cards as big as the one in my camera. If this is true I'm going to uninstall the removable drives it creates and disconnect it.

            Re: Compaq missing driver

The smbus driver is separate from the video driver sometimes. Just don't install all the extras. If it comes with the video package smbus is listed and has a check mark just like the other stuff: wow trial, etc.

The ati drivers are probably all that you need.

Just unplugging the card reader will make the extra drives go away, but if it's showing the extra drives, it should be working.

The card reader does work so I left it in. The video is now PCIe on a 128 meg ATI card. It works good. I did find it original recovery disk kit on the Compaq site. This isn't the restore disk that may have came with it. In fact I don't think it came with a restore disk at all. The restore was done from partition D. I killed this partition. I think this kit does all the partitioning and restores the hard drive to the way it came from Compaq and installs the OS...ect. Here is the number of this kit. "Xp home sp2 61nahered1 recovery kit" If anyone knows anything about this kit and the cost please let me know.

You don't need the recovery discs.
As long as you've got it up and running with the proper COA on the Compaq, it's fine, be done with it.

                    Re: Compaq missing driver

AMD gave these processors model numbers like "3500+" and such because they were said to be comparable to a 3.5ghz P4 of the time, so it should be quite a bit faster than your 4550
