    you need to study all the communication methods .
    then there are things like can bus .
    then learn about immobilisers .
    once you understand how it works then you can start playing around with it .

    So how much do you know about cars? more so the electronic systems?

    Mind me asking: What made you want to move into car electronic repairs / diagnostics / flashing?

    car ECUs get faulty rarely. Thus, you have to work in a big city to receive many faulty ECUs a month. you cannot open a repairshop just for ECU, because no costumer brings his/her car to you for ECU problems. instead, they go to car repair centers. therefore, you have to find a number of car repair centers that outsource their ECU repairs to you.
    A ECU does not need only programming. they usually need IC replacement. Thus, you have to learn ECU ICs. First, study ECU boards comprehensively to find out whether you can fix them or not.
