    Laptop Blackout

I'm posting this just to document the issue...the problem is now solved, but others may benefit from what I found.

My Lenovo T430 laptop began to abruptly shut down. There was no warning from Windows 10 Power Management, the screen would just go black and a complete Power ON and reboot was required. The machine would run about 60-80 minutes on battery alone. When plugged in to 120 VAC through the Lenovo power adapter, it would run about 90-100 minutes, even with a fully charged battery. With battery alone, the shutdown would occur at about 70% charge, but when the computer was turned back on after 2 hours, the shutdown would again occur after 60 minutes with a battery charge of 40%. Shutdown seemed to be related to total run time and not to battery charge.

I opened the machine, removed the heat sink/fan assembly, cleaned the fan, cleaned off the old thermal compound and applied new compound, and closed the machine. The shut down problem was unchanged.

I installed two programs to monitor fan speed and processor temperature (TPfancontrol and CPU Thermometer). Although the CPU seemed to run hot under load (sometimes up to 150F), the shut down never coincided with CPU load or temperature. I manually set the fan to run at maximum speed (about 5100 rpm), but the shutdown still occurred.

I borrowed a Lenovo T530 laptop and used its battery, and the problem disappeared. I put my battery in the T530, and the T530 shut down in exactly the same way as the T430.

The likely problem is that the temperature sensing circuit inside the battery is malfunctioning. The malfunction occurs even if the battery is fully charged and whether or not the computer is plugged in to AC power. The battery being replaced is made by DTK and is 18 months old. The DTK battery is the cheapest I've found at about $30. I bought another DTK, and the problem is solved.

    Re: Laptop Blackout

Ooow that sounds like an odd effect, it sounds like the laptop cant cope with a faulty battery, i bet the laptop wont switch on if on mains but no battery inserted.

Thanks for posting though, i will remember your problem :-)

I have a crappy old acer aspire 5315 from 2007 and it dont give a dam if the battery is there or not, so not all machines are sensitive.

Actually, it worked fine when I pulled the battery and only used AC. That's also what made me suspect the battery.

I have an HP Elitebook 840 i7 Laptop, upon using it one day, it started rebooting itself for several times. I then switched it off with the manual switch. and now, it is powering up, but after showing BIOS HP Logo, it is turning off immediate. tried to change the power adapter but no any positive show even using the battery. I have even changed the RAM. how could i fix this?

This seems to be a very different problem. I think you probably need to begin diagnosing the problem by booting in Safe Mode. Here's what HP recommends:
          http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03439317

Follow the instructions for "Entering Safe Mode from outside Windows".
