Messed up start menu in Windows 10.

    Hello,

I was integrating drivers in a Windows 7 installation disc using Dism. It takes a while so I just wrote a batch script and let it run all night. Needless to say, it seems our kitten was using the PC last night.

I suspect the start menu issue was from something she did. Now it looks like Windows 8 / 8.1 when we click the Windows square in the lower left hand corner. There's also a back button next to the Windows square in the lower left hand corner.

My wife seems to be really upset about this. Does anyone know how I can get it back to the normal one? The one that looks like 7? The way it was yesterday before I went to bed?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've seen this on a friend's machine, in the end we copied the settings from a new user account because we couldn't figure out a better way of doing it. Windows 10 sucks.

    Anyway:

1.) Create a new local admin account on the system
2.) Log off as you and on to the new account. The Start menu should look normal.
    3.) Copy the data in "C:\Users\(new username)\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\" to "C:\Users\(usual username)\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\"
4.) Log off the account and back on to the original one, the Start menu should be fixed.
    5.) Remove the account.

That's largely from memory, but I think that's how we did it. Hope it helps.

I figured it out. It was in what's called Tablet Mode. No idea how the kitten got it in Tablet Mode but unchecking it fixed the problem.

In case you run into the problem again, in the lower right hand corner, by the date / time, there's an icon that shows messages. Stuff like Updates were installed, restart now, or There's more than 3 programs running at startup. Disable some to make your PC run faster, etc.

If you click that, a window pops out from the side. At the bottom, there's a bunch of options. One says Tablet Mode. Click that to switch between the different modes.

After a video driver upgrade (through Windows Update) on a Dell Studio 1555 after upgrading to Windows 10 (from a fresh Windows 7 install from its recovery image), the Start Menu stopped working; so I tried deleting the display adaptors from Device Manager, restarted, and problem fixed.

Did you try restarting with the new drivers installed? I know with 10, there have been problems with the Start Menu crashing. Usually, a reboot fixes it. If not, usually a Windows update fixes it. I know we had this problem many times before the 10 Service Release came out. That seemed to fix it.

After a required restart, the problem remained, and deleting the display adaptor device as mentioned with a restart fixed this problem.
