Re: Looking for a software
Ah, yes, you want to buy Adverse Event Preventer 2.5. The best in it's class, and the leading choice for forum spammers the world over. Hahaha!

Re: nvidia Geforce 9800 gt doesnt work
The fan not spinning would suggest the card or fan (or both) are not getting any power. Reflowing won't fix that.

Re: PSU Main Capacitor replacement tips.
Unless they've tested as bad, the primary caps are probably fine. They rarely fail in PSUs in my experience, certainly nowhere near as often as the ones on the output side. NCC is a good brand too.

Re: Ratdude's Main rig V3.5
I solely use "old" hardware, I have no need for anything more modern. The number of people who get sold what are essentially gaming rigs and then spend all their PC time on Facebook is just stupid. I have useable Socket A systems running as general web browsing machines, use a first gen i5 laptop as my main system, and a Core 2 Duo E8500 based Shuttle XPC as a desktop PC. With an 8500GT graphics card, it even plays older games well.

Re: Power supply build quality pictorial. part 2
Seasonic 250 SU Active PFC (1U FlexATX)
This thing is tiny, ~80x40x150mm, much shorter than most other 1U supplies I've seen.
I wasn't able to get great pictures due to the crowded internal layout. The grey cover you see on the picture with the lid off is stuck with a mild adhesive to a couple of the heatsink surfaces - perhaps to aid heat transfer to the outer case, therefore using it as an additional heatsink?
NCC 150uF 400V primary, the rest are Teapo and Su'scon. I really dread the day I...Last edited by chowder; 04-14-2016, 02:30 AM.

Re: ECS MCP73VT-PM - works fine until Windows boots : BSOD
A bit of an old thread, but I've seen problems on a board with an E5800 (dual core) working fine, but an E8500 (Core 2 Duo) not, despite being compatible. In that case it was down to bent pins on the socket, in case any one else is struggling with a similar issue. All it took was a couple of hours of swearing, a magnifying glass, and a very fine sewing needle

Re: NCKN capacitors?
I've only ever seen them for sale on eBay. Chinese junk would be my guess, but I've never seen one in person. What PSU is it?

Re: Old laptop Review (well, RANT): Lenovo Thinkpad T60
I love old Thinkpads, they are some great laptops. I agree that the 4:3 screens on the older ones are a bit dated now though.
I use a 2010 X201 as my primary machine these days. 1st gen Core i5, 4GB RAM and an SSD. 1280x800 resolution, Bluetooth, pretty lightweight but solidly built, metal hinges, decent battery life. Great machine, and very quick. You can pick them up for peanuts nowadays, they retailed for ~$1500 when released

Re: Cleaning Motherboards - ATTN SMOKERS!!
This is great info, I wish I'd known about it back in the day. I used to be a pretty heavy smoker (and drinker) - I'd get drunk and blow smoke in to the front intake of my PC case to watch it come out of the back
That PC stopped working, and I wondered why...

Wow... I wouldn't trust that POS for 150W, nevermind 500!

Re: The 2016 Operating System Thread
It does work quite well, but I don't like installing all those 32 bit libs, or the nVidia drivers...

Re: The 2016 Operating System Thread
Debian Jessie x64 is my OS of choice, using XFCE as the window manager. I dual boot my main desktop (E5800 based system) with XP just for some old games. GTA San Andreas at the moment

Diy psu?
Have any of you ever designed/built your own switching power supply? I'm (slowly) learning about the theory, but wondered if any more knowledgeable members here had ever built their own.
If such a thing is feasible (I'm unsure about sourcing suitable transformers etc), it would be cool to have some "BCN approved" PSU designs for modest power requirements.
Just interested to hear peoples' thoughts, feel free to shoot it down if it's impractical or whatever

Re: Building an auto shop computer
If it's in a cabinet, I wouldn't have thought dust or fan noise would be major issues. Go for a massive fan and a decent PSU (upgrade the fan(s) in that as well).

Re: Microsoft becoming more aggressive in pushing Windows 10+end of Windows 8 patches
What a mess. I still use XP (for old games and some apps I just can't do without), but everything else is Debian Stable.

You didn't mention PSU, although I hope that would be the first suspect and you missed it out of the list. Just checking

Suppliers of BIOS chips
Can anyone recommend a supplier of pre-flashed BIOS chips? I've Googled a few, but could do with a reliable one
Need a replacement for an Abit NF7-S v2.

Re: Real or fake?
Aren't Sanyo caps branded Suncon nowadays? Unless these are old or lower capacitance are still Sanyo branded?
