    Weller PyroPen

    Is there any problems with using something like this;

    This is what i use regularly at work and i have a good 'feel' for the tool. I'm wondering if there could be a problem with static charges between myself and the board i'm working on.

    I've heard this tool compared to a 80watt iron.

    Good enough, or don't do it?

    ground the board to yourself, and you should be ok as far as ESD. NEVER use those 'cold heat' type irons on a motherboard though, you'll fry the board. I have a butane soldering iron I've used for field repairs on motherboards, never had any problems with it.

        For futue reference, i measured 820 degrees F (438 C) on the low setting, and 880 degrees F (471 C) with the valve wide open.

        This was read with a 24 guage 'K' type thermocouple in direct contact with the tip.
