    dimension gets an upgrade

Today I got a large load of cpu's in and one of them was one of these running at 1.2 Ghz.
The first thing I look at for upgrading is my Dell dimension 4100. It's already got a 1ghz cpu installed but it's not of the Tualatin series, it's a coppermine.
I have heard that some boards can't support Tualatin cpu's and the regulators or the CPU burn out because of this. Am I safe to install this new cpu or should I add this to my items for sale?

you'll actually be downgrading. a 1000/133 P3 coppermine is faster than a 1200/100 cellie. The loss of FSB speed will harm you more even with the 200MHz core gain.

That adapter will allow you to run a tualatin in a board not designed for one. All that's required is the board supports coppermines (which it obviously does), and the chipset supports the higher multiplier.

Well in that case I will stay coppermine.
If I have to shell out to get a performance decrease then I'm wasting my money.

Now if you got that adapter and stuck a 1.26 or a 1.4GHz Tualatin-S in it, you would gain. They have bigger caches and run really cool. It all depends on what you plan to use the server for.

This site is currently hosted on a dual P3 Tualatin 1.4GHz on a Supermicro P3TDDE motherboard with 2gb ECC RAM, and it's quicker than the old server, which was a Celeron 2.4GHz 1gb RAM. Granted, this server is only temporary, while I design and build some new stuff, it has no problems keeping up with things.

Yeah but I don't have a cpu that fast in socket 370 form.
If I did have one then It would sound like a good upgrade.
