LEDs Take Control of Display Backlighting in Vehicles

LEDs Take Control of Display Backlighting in Vehicles
by David DeAgazio, Global Lighting Technologies, Inc. -- ECN, 6/1/2006
In the past, automotive interior displays such as instrument clusters were backlit primarily by vacuum fluorescent (VF) or incandescent lamps. Then LCDs started to make inroads. For years, the LCD backlighting technology of choice (and necessity) has been cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs). CCFL-backlit LCDs, powered by DC/AC inverters, have been used to achieve the brightness, durability, operating temperature range and styling demanded by automotive applications.

Advances in LED technology and the way LEDs can be incorporated into a backlight are changing the landscape. Now, LEDs are in everything from a simple monochrome PRNDL display, to instrument clusters, to fully integrated entertainment/navigation/HVAC/Trip Comp/Messaging center console displays.
When these are used to backlight laptops that will be a significant improvement in life. BTW, this page may load reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeealllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy slow (even with broadband).

Power Supplies should be boring: No loud noises, no bright flashes, and no bad smells.

My new trailer lights are LED and super bright, I don't care so much now when I back them down and submerge in salt water, still on. They were cheap but way better than the old pieces of crap.
My nav\ancor light is also a led come to think of it.
