    I thought the "Green" ones were stupid because they park heads and spin down all the time, increasing wear.

      I will not touch the Green series...

      I've had to resort to Seagate's new "7200.14" series, and it also had some sort of head parking, though not as often as Caviar Green...

      I wasn't very impressed with the drive, felt pretty flimsy, not nearly as good as their last series I used (7200.11 - The 7200.11 drives with the CC firmware are actually great drives), not to mention the plethora of users complaining of all sorts of problems with the drives.

      WD "Blue" OTOH, is my preferred choice. The Blue Drives have a proven track record, and are still available in small quantities here and there.

          Yes. I hope that customer does regular backups. PCB swaps are probably not possible on drives that realign sectors for backwards compatibility.

            Regular WD Greens park their heads. AV series Greens ("AV-GP") don't.
            AV-GP's always have a V in the model, like WD10EVDS as opposed to its regular green-series brother WD10EADS.
            They never spin up or down on their own. That's an OS thing.

            There's no such thing as a variable rpm HDD either. Most people who say that simply believe the wrong statements in shops like those HDDs being listed as "5400-7200rpm". A variable rpm HDD would be very complicated to implement and wouldn't have any positive effect on power consumption. Quite the opposite actually..

              Oh right, I knew the OS has to spin down normal disks but I thought the power-saving ones did it on their own.

                The 7200.12 has the same case design as the 7200.11. The "7200.14" (or just "Barracuda" as Seagate calls it) has the case design from the Barracuda Green. How flimsy is it, exactly???

                  It's actually a single platter design (Or 1GB per platter - as I understand it). The drive is not the normal thickness, and it felt very light.

                  It feels like a rushed out series just because of the flood. And the head parking can be corroborated, just read the Amazon reviews (Amazon groups together the reviews of all the drives from this generation) about the intermittent clicking.

                  Go here and look at the page title. It clearly says "ST1000DM003 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 6Gb/s 1TB Hard Drive".
