bad caps in modem power adapter

    hi everyone!
one of my clients claimed that the 2wire dsl modem i sold to them (used) was "dead"
so i took it back and mainwhile they have no internet (but she didnt care as its not crucial to have internet)...
i went to the local electronics store, who tested the power adapter (which i thought was the problem anyway), and confirmed it was shot. they claimed that it got bad caps (i looked up when i got home that was indeed the problem...
so they sell me a xicon 25v 1000uf capacitor for 45cents...
i crack the adapter open and am presented with two probs...
    a. the cap they said was bad visually is ok.
    b. the cap they gave me while being the same size is different (the one in the adapter is a 200v 33uf. are they interchangeable???
    c. two smaller caps are visually bad...

A multimeter can be used to test any adapter for voltage.

Bold statement unless they opened up the adapter and did an ESR test. I mean it could anything bad in the adapter.

A 1000uF 25V to replace a 200V 33uF will result in you possibly reaching for the fire extinguisher.

I suggest you find another electronics store in the future for your requirements.

Re: bad caps in modem power adapter

I've repaired quite a few 2wire power adapters. IIRC, it was 1000uf 25v that blew in all of them.

I have one in use and it's working fine at the moment.

I've never seen any damage to the router STJ, just red light of death. Replace/repair PSU and off you go.

There are revised versions of these adapters out, since BT still supply these 2wire routers. I think the revised versions use different colour lettering for the 2wire logo on the PSU.
The one I just found has red lettering, I think the revised ones use white.

              Edit: Just pulled one apart.
              33uf 400v mains cap.
              3 x 1000uf 10v smaller caps.
