    Vista BSOD during CD bootup

I am trying to install Vista Ultimate x64 on my HTPC, but it keeps crashing. It gets past the point where it says "Windows is loading files", and when the windows logo appears for a couple seconds, it BSOD's and says "Machine Check Exception". This is during the first boot off the CD.

This is a Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 motherboard with 2GB ram. Any idea what could be going on? It always worked fine with XP MCE 2005.

Look for an option in the BIOS for "IO APIC" or similar and make sure it is enabled.

You don't happen to have one of the few 939 semprons that don't support 64 bit?

Other than that do the usual checks like memtest and prime95. Also try the disk in another machine.

Turns out it was the SATA for some reason. I installed an IDE drive and it seems to be working fine now.

This board uses the ULI M1689 chipset, and has an Athlon 64 3700+ installed.
