The lightweight casings of ancient Maxtors like the 90288D2 (15.7ms; VERY loud) do a very good job of amplifying the seek noise. 
I know you don't care much about access time, but (unless something's already wrong with the drive) it couldn't hurt to run a seek speed test and it won't take a long time.
