Really? The 7200.7 PATA drives weren't set to an AAM value of 254, or "off" (255?), but to a value lower than that? Like 190 or lower? Didn't know that... I remember my ST3160023A (firmware 8.01) being loud when seeking. As is my ST312006A (firmware 8.54). Then again, they could be set to my performance mode, and for me, nothing quite beats the quietness of the ST340016A (3.10) seeking, even when AAM is set to 254. My ST325024A (3.AAE) was always quiet too, though... maybe it was set to "quiet" mode. Samsung drives definitely aren't of quality but even then I don't think they're quite as bad as Toshiba drives... I never really measure access times. Not that it's uninteresting, just that access times are so quick for me that I don't notice much of a difference. Could be that different firmware versions have different AAM modes set.
