I think HDDs are much more complex and fragile devices than CRTs, though, so they are more likely to fail, and not just because of operating or non-operating shock. SSDs may be another issue because data recovery is practically impossible with them and because they're rather expensive, especially because of the limited amount of storage... still in too much of a premature state no matter the advantages over mechanical hard disk drives. I have experienced the problem of permanently dead and stuck pixels on flat panels, too... and my reasons for bringing up flat panel failures are that on this forum I see more posts about broken flat screens than anything else.
