Sony ke-p42m1 Plasma artefacts
Good day folks. I have this big beast in my shop and I was hoping those more savvy with plasmas can help me with some tips.
First of all, a few fun facts: to begin with, it barely f**kin' moves - it is the HEAVIEST TV I have ever laid my hands on. I COULD not get this thing on the table myself - it took two of us...and it's only a 42 incher. I can't imagine this thing being any bigger. It even has a wall mount....imagine that: there's no way you'd have this on a plaster or brick wall
I took the plastic cover off and was greeted with another metal back...dafuq ? Under that, I finally got to the goodies inside...lots of boards, wires and stuff happening in there...intimidating.
The chap brought it in with no picture, although the LED was green at the front. Of course I first wanted to check if it's getting Ve and Vs, not having found any blown fuses on the X-main or Y-sustain, so I plug it in and get normal Ve and Vs. I have a look underneath and the TV was on....dafuq no. 2 So does this mean the thing fixed itself ? Not quite...someone before me had been in there before and the only thing I can think of is a loose connector or cold joint that got banged around when we moved it which caused it to spring back to life...for now. It's been running for like an hour no with no issues.
The picture quality is absolute garbage on this, really, it's awful, even by the standards of those days. I reckon CNET gave it the same review I did: poor picture quality. It's made worse by the analog composite signal I was forced to use on it...oh you thought it had HDMI ? Nope - that's way too new for this thing The issue is not so much a troubleshooting issue than it is a curiosity...the pictures couldn't do it justice so I didn't bother trying to take snaps of the screen, but there's like noisy VHS-type lines darting across the screen at even distances...is this down to the AV signal or pure plasma "bugginess" ?
