Samsung-PN58B860Y2FXZA-BD01: Mostly Black Display and No Audio

    History is as follows:
Previous owner dropped the Plasma TV and the display stopped working. It came to me free, as his landlord needed it removed from the house.
There are no visible cracks in the screen or on the body.
The only visible damage is on the bottom piece of plastic that is lights up blue when the TV is on.

Visually inspected all of the internals and could find no obvious faults, shorts, or blown capacitors, other than that the fan had dust caked in badly. A few quick unscrews, some alcohol and compressed air later, and the fan is back in tip-top shape. I also ensured all connectors are securely in place by disconnecting and reconnecting them.

    Issue is as follows:
Screen is mostly black, but some pixels display in the bottom left and right corners of the screen, with "static" looking pixels flickering across the lower half of the screen infrequently. The pixels that display in the bottom corners are fairly distorted, dark, and mostly colorless but are rectangular in shape.

I connected my laptop via HDMI and can see the desktop duplicated in the bottom corners, but no audio will play. I attempted adjusting the audio and muting/unmuting to no success.

I can adjust the source and change the menu, thought I cannot see any real details from just the corners of the screen.

One thing to note is a somewhat loud click sound when the TV is powered on. No sure if it is the sound of a switch, short, or just power on but my LED does not do the same thing when I turn it on.

I need to know if the Plasma is dead, or revive-able. Don't have a multimeter ATM, but will be picking on up this weekend if necessary. I was thinking that the ceramic fuses may be bad and in need of replacement.

Pics below. Better ones tomorrow when I have the assistance of daylight.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That could be a few things. Normally I would suspect the z sustain board to be defective (the board on the far right) but since it was dropped I would suspect the panel has a hairline fracture on the very bbottom and some gas has eescaped causing air to intrude into the panel. The system works under a gas charge and vacuum. If it loses vacuum it loses its ability to display.
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

I have to concur with Freak, this is most likely panel gas leakage.

I guess it's still worth checking the Y-main (Vsx, Vsch) voltages and the X-maim Be. And the general Vs and Va supplies.

        Thanks for the quick response.

Would a gas leak also cause the audio to not function?

Decided to take out the X & Y Sustains for closer inspection, and found what looks to be a board fault on the top of the Y sustain. (Pics attached)

I am wondering if the YSus is my problem as the bottom speakers are connected through this board. Though it looks like there is a sub(?) running from the Control Board.

Any thoughts on why the audio is also caput?

No obvious shorts or faults on the X sustain.

Also tried inspecting the screen for any obvious (but structurally hidden) indications of fracturing with no luck.

Worth checking that transistor for shorts.

Re, no audio. It can sometimes be hard to switch the TV to the right source if you cannot see the picture. Also, the previous owner could have turned off "TV Speakers" in the user settings which mutes the on board speakers so a surround amplifier can be used instead.

In one case, the previous owner reported that on their TV first the picture went off (backlight) then the sound went. In that case, they had accidentally muted the sound on the TV trying to get it working again by pressing lots of buttons.

In general I don't rely on audio not working to be sure of other faults.

Also, any thoughts on buying used Y/X Sus boards on Ebay?
I can get both for under $50, and am thinking that is worth a gamble.

I managed to get to the laptop source input (see first series of attachments, you can barely make out the taskbar clock) and even tried multiple HDMI inputs, but the audio was unresponsive. I have a Samsung sound bar I can try (I am using its remote to control the TV as I don't have a remote). I don't ever play audio through my TVs so I am not as worried about the TV audio, it only needs to pass through to my sound system.

Oh yeah, didn't realise what I was looking at there. Ok, that makes some sense. Since you got a picture, even partial, the main A/V and control is probably working ok.

Would you be able to borrow an oscilloscope - even a basic analog one would confirm if the sus boards are working.

Don't think so. I'll check around, but I doubt it.
