    Philips plasma display trouble 50PF9630A/37

We ordered cable internet switching from DSL. The cable company had to come out because they couldn't activate our new modem. The service technician stated he had to remove a filter on the street pole outside to activate our modem. Watching tv that night for approximately two hours the display trouble happened abruptly.

    Model 50PF9630A/37
    Chassis BP2-2U AA
    SDI S50HW-XD04

I've been working on it for a few days and doing the research. Downloaded and read the PDP 2006 Philips training guild, the chassis service manual, and the very helpful SDI PDP repair manual.

The trouble is in all inputs including the menu. The tv starts fine and does not go into protection. I've checked SAM and found no error codes. I've checked all voltages according to the PDP label and all are within tolerances. I've scanned all boards for burn components and all looks good.

I've read other posts here with similar trouble and I'm still conflicted as to what board/s might be bad. I've read Coppell TV blogs to test my Y upper and lower scan buffer boards but mine seem different.

I've included a you-tube video so you can see the display in detail. The wavy lines in the video are from the camera and not the display. When I change from the menu to channel 3 I have no cable connected. http://youtu.be/QH8V6PKKRMo

    Looking for some advise,
    Thank you!

To me, it looks like a Y-buffer failure.

Is there a way to test these Y scan buffer boards to determine if they might be bad before I order replacements? There seems to be differences between these boards with different PBA Rev. numbers. See mine attached, Rev. A-2

      Thank you,

To be honest it is pretty hard to test them, the best way involves a scope but upon seeing that symptom I would replace both boards anyway as it is indicative of such a failure. I do not know what causes it as I have not yet had one of these to repair.

I read some where that if the horizontal lines were contained in the full height of the screen it was a problem in the logic board?

I've ordered both Y buffer boards, I will up date the post in a few days after I receive and install them.

          Thanks for your reply,

It would be more likely to be a logic board issue if it was consistent from block to block (the panel is divided into 8 segments, of which each buffer IC drives the odd or even lines), but it is clearly not consistent. It varies considerably in intensity across the panel.

I'd like this set to last a few more years. I understand it's an old tv, but I enjoy the ambilight feature. I have my heart set on the OLED technology, and hoping it will be more affordable by then.

It's worth the investment if all I have to do is replace the two y buffer boards. I will let you know how it turns out.

              Regards,

                Here is the follow-up,

I purchased the two Y buffer boards and installed them. Attached is a picture of what the screen looks like now. What's disturbing is that I re-installed my original boards and now I'm getting this same display. The display is worse than before.

I'm giving up on this plasma. It's to bad because I loved the ambilight feature.

I returned the boards and they gave me a full refund plus my shipping cost back to them.

More than likely you got some dud boards, and they proceeded to kill your Y-main. Dammit I wish eBay sellers would actually TEST the boards they pull.

I think your right. If only I could have tested them. I bought the boards from TV Parts Plus. http://www.tvpartsplus.com

I'm going to part this tv out. If anyone needs parts for this I will have a good PDP, power supply, logic main, SSB board, X main, logic buffers upper and lower E,F,G, ambilight lamps and boards, audio board, filter, cables ect.

                    Thanks for your replies Tom.

You could probably sell it in its faulty condition for more than the boards are worth individually, the Y-main and Y-buffer fail a lot but yours are dud so you can't sell those and the other boards are fairly reliable.

this thread scares me, simply because those boards you returned will probably be resold to some poor soul who will then toast their Y main...
