    Pioneer PRO 607PU (o Elite 1540HD) Flickering

I have searched the entire internet for an answer to this question. I have a 60" Pioneer Elite 607PU that flickers on all inputs. It will flicker with no video input and the volume adjusted up or down (puts a small insert on the screen). Note the whole screen flickers not just the volume adjustemnt screen. With no input at all the screen will remain black. If you select the video inputs (with no other video input) the screen will not flicker. The video input is a small square in the top right corner.

I have had two TV repair people come out. One replaced the caps on the PS and the main board and then quit saying he hates Pioneers. The next said it was the Y-Sus which I changed and have the same symptom. I ordered a logic board because it was only $30 which I will try tonight.

One last bit of important info was that the original symptom of the fail was a vertical bar running down the screen in multiple places. If I turned the set on and off the v- bars would go away. Note: I have not seen the bars lately. Also the flickering went from 4 quick sucessive flashes in a minute to continuous over a period of a week.

Has anyone seen this or have an idea what the issue is? X-sus Y-scan etc?????????????

    Please help...

Can we see a video of it? Sometimes a defective buffer (Y-scan) can cause flickering, as can an ERC fault on the X-scan. Pioneer and Panasonic are far nicer to work on than any average LG/Samsung display, sounds like a defeatist tech.

I will get a video of it and post it. I am at "work" right now. The only thing i can put into words is that when any video (volume, tv guide, component input, s-vid) other than the video input insert is on the screen the WHOLE screen will flicker. Note the screen image when flickering looks fine... i.e not degraded (probably just give you a siezure).

Would a y-buffer make the whole screen flicker? I figured the y-sus could affect the whole screen, but i thought the y-buffer would affect areas of the screen. As each chip drives a separate horizontal section.

So you can see the dark level glow is not flickering (though it may be very dark on this set), but any lit up pixels flicker?

Yes the whole image flickers. It looks like there is a blanking signal (Electronic Warfare term) being applied to the screen.

What I thought was important is that even the black part of the image is flickering when no input video is applied to that section of the screen. I.e. I have no video source at all and then hit the volume up button. As long as the volume inset is displayed the screen will flicker. Once it goes away the screen will not flicker. I.e. no input source at all no flicker.

Re: Pioneer PRO 607PU (o Elite 1540HD) Flickering

This is important because the priming glow is generated by an independently regulated supply, separate from the sustaining voltage/process (making the desired pixels light up.) The priming glow is required to initialise the plasma panel gas and to make it properly emit light, as well as clear previous images, though it can be very low on a good TV.

Is the frequency of the flickering independent of the amount of light emitted? A plasma display uses more power with brighter images, unlike an LCD. If there is a power regulation issue, this would be apparent as a change in frequency with light output.

I would say in the beginning (when it was not flickering continuously) it was dependent on the screen image i.e. golf flickered a lot more often than a dark movie. Now it is a harder to tell because it flickers almost continuously.

I was thinking it looked like a supply issue. But the first tech said after he changed the supply caps that the supply was good.

Capacitors are far from the only problem a PSU can have.

The cheapest supply I can find is $400. There is no listing of the supply voltages on the board or panel or chassis. I am sick of shot gunning this problem. Without a schematic or obvious blown device how to diagnose the problem?

I'm pretty sure we could repair the power supply issue.

In terms of a service manual, here is one on elektrotanya:

That will have the voltage specifications, and probably schematics too.

If you do decide to trash it, please list it on craigslist first, someone will buy it and fix it. I for one would adore a Pioneer plasma. I'm already adoring the 46" Panny in my room right now, it's a older generation but it's still got a very nice picture.

The voltages are clearly labelled, page 10. As for Vs and Va, they are written on the plasma panel's metal plate.
