Help with Samsung S42AX-YD01 Y Sustain and Buffers

    Hi Guys,

This Set was exhibiting signs of an about to fail Lower Y Buffer before it stopped working completely.. (the lower half of the picture would die and then come back on after a little while) i have striped the set down and have diagnosed down to a bad Y Sustain board and/or both failed Buffer boards now.

i have used the information in the blog at coppelltvrepair.com to check for a short between the two groups of legs.. and i get a reading of 15K Ohm..

    http://blog.coppelltvrepair.com/2010...according.html

and checked my buffers (they are dead)

    http://blog.coppelltvrepair.com/2010...er-boards.html

i have checkd the fuse of the Y Sustain board and it is ok, i have noticed that there is abit of heat discoloration under the transistors on the board (please see pics) is this normal?..

im going to test the transistors on the board:

Just wandering if you guys would have any more information on any other tests i can do on my Y Sustain board? i dont really want to pay for a new Y sus or the shipping to get it checked if i can determine it is ok..

any help would be much appreciated.. :-)

Y Sustain model number is: LJ92-01200A
and the buffer boards are: LJ41-02760A and LJ41-02761A

Some here are familiar with Coppell's excellent blog. They do have a spot on their blog to leave comments and I presume questions.

From what I know and read, they are a standup company and have ebay auctions for repair parts and service.

Yea from what i read and see they seem good, i have email'd Copells.. the problem i have is that i live outside the US and shipping in and out is a killer.. if my Ysus is damaged i will happily send it over with my buffers for refurbishment.. im just trying to work out if theres a good chance its not dead.. in order to save on postage.. and ultimately.. the fix bill :-)

I faced a similar problem about 6 months ago. The failure consisted of one shorted buffer and one transistor on the Y-sus, both common failures. The hybrid (IPM) appeared to be fine.

The problem was the cost of parts to repair the buffer (and the skill level) made it impractical to try that repair myself. And replacing SMD TO-262 packages requires rework equipment I don't have. I wound up replacing both buffers and the Y-sus.

Thanks PlainBill .. was hoping you would chime in..

.. so i had abit of luck over the last few days.. i scored 8 plasma screens 42-50" for $20.. all broken.. but good for parts..

after pulling them apart i got another S42AX-YD01.. this one had a different power supply though.. pulled the Y sustain out and it looks prity good.. no heat damage.. pulled the Bufferes out.. the Lower was definitely dead .. the upper still had a couple hundred K Ohm.. so i put the "new" Ysus in my original screen and powered it up.. all stayed on.. so i thought id give the upper buffer a bit of a test (with my finger on the power switch at the wall) it powered up and i got half a screen.. Yusss..

the buffers are going to have to get refurbished.. do you guys think it would be ok to try a couple new buffers with this "new" Ysus ?.. im thinking that maby if one of the transistors are shorted and on the lower buffer side.. this could really wrek a new buffer quick..

i also scored a S42SD-YD07 this had the same power supply as the S42AX.. the power supply was giving me a 13 blink error on the alarm LED.. this according to the manual is: D5VL OVP, UVP.. i cant find much on google.. but it sounds like some Over voltage protection or under voltage protection? .. i then proceeded to pull all the power cables to the Ysus the X and F buffers.. and it didnt fix the problem.. the PSU still gave me that error.. so i pulled the PSU out of my original plasma and put that in.. same error.. any ideas? and to add to this.. after putting my original PSU back into my original S42AX i now have the 13blink error on that too.. so now i have two PSU's showing the same error on two different Plasmas?

what is this error code?.. how to fix?

anyways.. i also got a Sampo PME-50X6 50" Plasma HDTV .. after power on this is showing 5 blink led code from its PSU.. i cant find anything on google relating to this set, no manual nothing.. any ideas guys?

i also got a S42YD-YD05 with a smashed screen.. so if anyone would like the boards out of the back let me know..

and i also got a couple of other junkers and 2 broken LCD'd.. both Samsung with broken screens.. so ill be looking for screens for them maby..

                Congratulations on your score.

Front panel blink codes are a function of the firmware. Not all TV manufacturers use them. Error codes on the power supply itself would be a function of the power supply, usually (but not always) supplied with the panel. In cases like this it would be a big help if you identify the manufacturer of the TV as well as the panel.

The PSU's that have the 13 blink error code(s) are PHILIPs and the other is unknown..

both have Samsung PDP's and internals

the models are: S42AX-TD01 and S42SD-YD07

the other Plasma that i would like to get working again is the Sampo 50" model: PDP50WXDP1#

i read another one of your posts a while back about the samsung blink codes on the PSu and yeah.. you said they were firmware related and if they hadnt updates the firmware its very difficult to find the fault.. maby i could call a a Samsung service agent or someone in the industry..?

Oh sorry.. i may not have explained myself properly.. the Blink codes are on the ALARM LED on the PSUs, according to the manual i have hey relate to D5VL OVP, UVP .. the brands are PHILIPs and the other is unknown..

both have Samsung PDP's and internals

the models are: S42AX-TD01 and S42SD-YD07

and both have the Samsung Version 4 PSU ..

basically LED8002 and 8001 come on briefly.. followed by a coupe relay clicks and then go off and i get the ALARM 13 Blink code repeatdly after that

                    The 50" is a Sampo model: PDP50WXDP1#

On thing to watch out for on Philips plasma TVs is the 12V supply. Many of them use it for both the audio output amp and the DC-DC converter on the Small Signal Board. When a problem with either occurs, the 12V supply is overloaded, and typically shows up as an error code.

Both failures are mentioned in the service manuals, and are relatively easy to repair. The DC-DC converter repair requires about $10 in parts. The audio output amp is about as expensive.

So i pulled the PSU out of the Panel and bench tested it with the jumpers on.. it powered on and stayed on with not blinking alarm led.. so this bring me to the conclusion that there must be a faulty Y, X, E ,F board somewhere in the mix..

just on another note.. do you think that my "new" Y Sustain that i put in the S42AX-YD01 would be ok to run with two New Buffers?

Yes. Understand, I don't have a great deal of experience with these, but my understanding is the usual failure is initiated by a buffer shorting, taking out the Y-Sustain and generating enough of a surge to weaken the other buffer.
