When I can't get the schematic, I use a bench power supply and test for shorts. Start low, .7v to 3.0v and 1.0a. Next I look for the voltage regulators (step-down DC voltage controllers), sometimes next to the big 3.3v and 5.0v inductors or exactly right underneath the board. If I identify the controller, I look at the datasheet and find if Vin is coming in. Closest one to the battery terminal inputs could be the battery charger with one single inductor. Also look at the DC input jack connector, sometimes there is a big Zener diode protecting circuit, might be open and blown if a huge surge came in.
Hope this helps a bit, applies to all motherboards.
