Good day folks. I've got a very peculiar fault with this laptop: if you try powering it on with the power button like normal, the screen just stays blank and the power indicator begins to blink. However, get this: the guy discovered that if you hit the power button WHILE holding the F8 key at the same time, it starts up fine ! What do you make of that ? I haven't got the exact model at the moment, so it's mostly for speculation out of possible past experiences others may have had.
I had a look at it myself very briefly, without digging very deep yet. The same behavior occurs even after a Windows restart: the screen just stays blank and you have to force a power off to repeat the "trick"...if you can even call it that. Of course, I tried accessing the BIOS after a restart, but couldn't, because it was just a blank screen. True, I've yet to try accessing it after a successful start with the "trick key", with which leads me to believe it's the BIOS that's FUBAR in some way.
The guy speculated there may be a setting which prompts the laptop to output to the external monitor first and with this being an old model, it sure sounded like something I HAD seem before in other laptops - there was an option called "display output", which had a choice between "laptop panel" and "CRT" or something like that. However, since I could not get into the BIOS yet, I couldn't confirm this one has it too. Even if it did and it was somehow set to CRT, I doubt it would disable the built-in panel wit nothing connected to the VGA output - it's not THAT dumb. Still, it doesn't explain the blinking of the power indicator, so this theory is pretty much busted....
I'll definitely dig deeper, but in the meantime, what do you guys think ? Pretty strange, huh ? :|
