    A2159 820-01598-06 USB ports

    Hi,

I have this liquid-damaged MacBook that has no schematics available yet (so far as I know). I've cleaned up the corrosion as best I could, and it worked after that. Then I unplugged it and tried to connect the battery to see if it would charge it. The thing wouldn't come back on, no matter what combination of battery vs no battery I tried.

I have a USB C ameter and noticed that one of the ports reads 20V and 0.08A, while the other reads 5V and 0.27A. While I've forgotten more about electronics from when I was a kid than I care to mention, I wanted to run it by you guys to see if you think it's a short on some USB controlling IC. I think it has one IC for each USB port, right?

Is there any motherboard that's similar enough to this one that actually does have schematics available?

    Thanks in advance.

This board has a layout that no board used before so chances are you won't find a matching boardview. USB-C controllers are CD3217 rather than the CD3215 found on earlier models and we don't know what are the differences and they're not available to buy. For schematics, maybe you'll find similarities with 820-00850.
In any case it sounds like one of the LDO of the CD3217 that has 5V/0.27A is shorted to ground, so chances are the CD3217 is bad.
But without parts available there's not much you can do… this one will probably have to sit on a shelf for a few more months at least.

You can always measure voltage and resistance to ground on the capacitors near both CD3217 and compare if the layout is similar enough around both CD3217 so you can find the line that's causing a problem, and inject some voltage if there's a short to ground.

Excellent thoughts, Piernov. That gives me a few more things to be getting on with before I put it on the back-burner. My suspicion is that I need to reball the CD3217.. and then hope it was just crud or a corroded connection underneath. Now I just have to find a stencil that this chip will fit with!

Thanks very much for your help. If I get it fixed, I will post details here to potentiall help someone else.
