    Asus g771jw questions

So basically, whilst trying to repair this laptop board i may have made a mistake. I'm trying to determine whether or not my mistake was enough to have completely destroyed the processor. I don't think i did but i will explain.

Basically i was checking the power supplies and as i am new to this, i found the coils around the cpu thinking they were a power supply. Using my multimeter i found it went straight to ground and thought it may be a short to ground. As such i decided to use an 18650 3.7v battery (as i didnt have a DC power supply) to find this short. It ended up getting warm around a small point on the cpu shown. I believe the rail is called VCore.

I never allowed the processor to get too hot. As in it never went over around 90 degrees ferenheight. I didnt hold it there for too long. Im just worried i could have possibly fried an internal component?

Overall i am scared i may have damaged the processor. If anyone has more expertise in this and knows if what i did caused any major damage please let me know.

3.7V to the CPU? This is shot, throw it in the trash.

Also, low resistance to ground on CPU VCore is perfectly fine, it will usually be between 2 and 20 ohms. High power low voltage rails will have a low resistance to ground, so it applies to GPU VCore and PCH VCore too.

Hmm... Processor might be damaged as it runs on 1-1.5 volts. However, since you didnt powered too long-it might be alive. First sort out the problems in mb. Btw whats the actual problem???

For reference, a board i have that i know works. Has a resistance to ground of around 14-20 Ohms. The one on this board is showing some 1.4 ohms or so. It's not looking good :c

Is it supposed to be so low after adding the 3.7 volts. Ffs i really hope this isnt damaged.

Processor wasnt the original issue, but after i fixed the original issue, it doesnt power up like its supposed to.

It is dead, the CPU is shorted internally. Those really don't like overvoltage, especially when applied for a long time (a couple of seconds is a very long time here).
In the P4 era you could get away with a high-side MOSFET shorting and sending 12V to the CPU for a split second (before the PSU turned off) but this is not the case anymore. And Haswell are even more picky about this, the integrated VRM is very fragile.
