    Compaq cq58 charger issue

Hello can anyone help, firstly I have a compaq cq58 that won't switch on,but unsure if the charger works.
I have a dell charger same connection but slightly higher voltage 3-34a instead of the compaq/Hp 3-33a,both are 19.5v.
    Will it work ?

    Re: Compaq cq58 charger issue

The short answer is that it won't hurt anything, but it might not work.

Those chargers use the same connector, so that's okay. The voltage is the same, so that's okay. The amps rating is how much current it can safely produce. So anything equal to or higher is okay. Plugging in this charger is perfectly safe.

But... those chargers have a data pin. The outside of the barrel connector is negative, the inside is positive, and the center pin is data. When you plug in the charger, it tells the notebook what kind of charger it is. The Dell charger will only work properly with a Dell and the HP/Compaq will only work properly for an HP/Compaq.

If you want, you can use a voltmeter to check for voltage on the original charger. You need to probe the inside and outside of the barrel (don't touch the center pin).

I don't remember what the CQ58 does when you plug in an unrecognized charger. But I think it will either refuse to charge the battery or maybe just refuse to run at all. It won't hurt to try. But if it doesn't work, that doesn't prove that the notebook is broken. You might just need a actual HP/Compaq charger instead.
