Successful repair to HP Compaq C500

Hello, A friend gave me his laptop to repair (HP compaq C500). It was dead except for a flashing charge light that would twinkle a few times brfore it also stopped. I came across this advice http://mayohardware.blogspot.com.au/...pidly-and.html and tried the repair on my friends computer. The gist of the repair (here I quote the source Mayo Hardware) "When I connected the DC source with the battery inserted, I thought the charge light would come on as it should regularly. Since it didn't and flashed at the same rate as the other LED's this told me what area to check. When checking the MOSFETs PQ5, PQ49, and PQ4 all of them were of the same type [FDS4435] but PQ49 had a short in both directions with meter set to DIODE mode. This indicates the FET is shorted. So that was the first thing to replace and test again." I followed his lead and I am happy to say this worked! The mosfets were available on ebay. I am posting this in case anybody else has a similar problem with one of these.

I'm very inexperienced with these repairs. Nobody was more surprised than me when it booted up.

For any newbies like me: I tested the mosfet according to advice on this site (Badcaps) and found that it was faulty. Couple that to the advice from "Getting in too deep" I thought I was on the right track. I was able to cut the legs off the old mosfet with a scalpel and then desolder the remaining bits (there's not a lot of room there). Then cleaned up the pads with braid. I then resoldered the pads. Getting the new mosfet to sit on the pads was a bit of a trial but I managed to solder one leg and after that the others would sit still.

    Hope this helps someone.
