CF-20 Toughbook (mk1) Trackpad/Touchpad and USB ports not working

    Hey guys,

Just purchased a CF-20 (mk1) supposedly was all working. However, the seller had done a fresh install of windows 10 but did not install any driver. Seller was adamant the trackpad/touchpad was working.

The touchpad/trackpad does not work. No led lights near the trackpad. The keyboard works, the USB 2 port on the base does not work, The USB 3 ports will recognise a USB 3 flashdrive but did not recognise a USB mouse. The ethernet port on the keyboard section works.

The USB 3 port on the actual tablet section works with no issues.

Checked device manager and found heaps of devices that were unknown and some known devices but without drivers installed.

Went to the panasonic website and downloaded and installed all the relevant drivers. Now there are no unknown devices.

However trackpad still does not work. I did find something interesting. If the tablet section was disconnected from the keyboard then reconnected. The trackpad worked for 5-10 seconds but was laggy and then will just stop working.

Touchpad also does not move the cursor in the PC-Diagnostics thing in the BIOS.

The USB 3 ports on the keyboard section would also seem to have no power (looking at the red led on the bottom of the mouse). However, if you disconnected the tablet and then connected it back. The led on the mouse would come on for a couple seconds then turn off.

I did find another post on here with a similar issue but there was no more information.

    TL;DR
    -Bought CF-20 toughbook (mk1)
-Seller did fresh install of win 10, no drivers installed
-touchpad does not work at all, even in PC-Diagnostics
-keyboard works, ethernet port works (on keyboard), USB 3 semi works, USB 2 port doesnt work.
-Touchpad semi works for a bit (5-10 seconds) and not all the time if you disconnect tablet from keyboard, then reattach.

    Any ideas welcome.

Re: CF-20 Toughbook (mk1) Trackpad/Touchpad and USB ports not working

USB connectors (USB3 / USB2 / USB1.1) are based on a voltage to power the downstream device (mouse) and communication signals (D+/D- for USB2 and lower).

Often, each USB connector will feature a local USB load switch which acts like an electronic fuse. If the current draw from a downstream port is exceeded, the USB load switch is supposed to remove power on the VBUS line and report the fault to the upstream USB host controller (often the PCH these days).

Start with checking the VBUS to ground voltage -> should be ~5 volts if all is well.

Next, remove all power -> meter in diode mode. Red meter probe, yes RED to ground. Black meter probe to D+ on the same faulty port connector.

    What is the voltage reading?

    Then repeat with D- line.

Post each measurement. No voltage to the board when checking the DIODE mode readings!!

CF-20 Mk1 Bought online and Received. Touchpad worked upon arrival and then refused to work after Win 11 install (worked intermittently)

I was having the same exact issue, here's what worked for me.

      Release Screen to Tablet Mode
Remove All Batteries (Tablet and Keyboard)
      Remove SSD
      NOW WITH EVERYTHING REMOVED —->
Plug Tablet into the Power Supply for a CF-20
Boot up to BIOS, Reconnected keyboard, and confirm the touchpad.

I'm not kidding you. Simple! I was pulling my hair out, reinstalling drivers, windows, bios flashes, potentially removing and replacing CMOS battery. This essentially does that without having to remove the battery.

I really hope this works for everyone who comes across this annoying issue and potentially other issues as well.
