Dell 5565 AC Adapter not Identified LA-D803P

As the title says I am getting the dreaded no adapter identified please use a 65W dell charger warning.

I have tried different adapters, replaced the DC jack with a new one, no luck with either of those.

Using a multimeter I get a fluctuating voltage at the ID pin, 0.20v to 0V to 0.15v to 0.08V. As far as I understand it this is likely the one wire protocol trying to communicate the ac adapter ID.

At the PSID pin on the chip I am getting these small bouncing voltages. I think it should be around 3v.

On the +3Valw I have 3v but on the downstream side of the 2.2K resistor I get the small bouncing voltage 0.20V.

I have replaced the 2.2K resistor with no change, I have also jumped out the PQ6 mosfet as a starting point. This laptop has had no other repairs.

Any help would be greatly appreceated.

I've attached an image of what I've done so far.

Probably a damaged EC (assuming that's where the PS-ID goes). PD4 is supposed to short out when the DC jack collapses and you get 19V directly up the PS-ID pin. If that's not fitted, then you rely on PQ5 to turn off PQ6 to protect the EC from overvoltage. But that's likely not quick enough so that's the function of PD4.

Saves Dell a few bucks I suppose.

Be sure that PQ6 is off the board. Confirm the resistance of PR4.

        Thank you for the replies.

PQ6 is off the board and the S and D pins soldered together.

Checked PR4 and it is 33 Ohm.

PR3 is a pull up to 3V. If PS_ID is being pulled down, then with PQ6 off board then you're only left with the EC causing that.

The no stuff PD4~PD6 are all there to prevent overvoltage or clamp this input. Saves some bucks not fitting them, but end result is you will have to replace your EC to fix I'd say.

Agreed with Borat and his low hanging fruit.

              Haha thanks for the info.

I'm a newbie, is this worth/possible to replace? I see I can get one online for about $6.

It will need to be programmed on this model. You’ll need a SVOD or similar to do that, or find someone who sells it pre programmed. They are straightforward to do if you have the soldering skills.

If you have not done it before then yes, it can be a challenge.

You will need a hot air work station + tweezers + flux + patience.

Any attempts to remove the part before the solder is fully in liquid state will rip the PCB traces off the logic board. Then it is 100% game over.

The EC part will be square in shape and larger than the following video but the process is the same.

Also, not sure of where the firmware resides on this EC - that is, is there an external flash memory to load the firmware or is it internal. If it is internal, then you will need a special programming tool like SVOD (check the other threads on this topic) OR you will need to purchase a pre-flashed EC device for your model.

Here is a video that offers the removal process:

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQda5iibZos

Most likely you will have a local phone repair shop in the mall, etc. that performs such rework. Ask them, how much to remove a 100 pin (?) TQFP device off a logic board -> clean the pads -> solder on a fresh TQFP device to replace this defective one.

Here in Ontario, we have all of the required soldering tools but not the tools to flash the EC, at this time.

What is the marking on EC chip? If its MEC, it'll auto program on first boot.
