Thinkcentre M900 USDT - Front USB 1 not working

    Hello everyone,

I have a problem that comes up very often with this model and I can't solve it. USB port #1 on the front panel is not working properly. In fact, it only works in 3.0, any 2.0 device connected to it does not work. The port is in good condition and presents no visual symptoms. The bios was updated and it still doesn't work.

(I would like to point out that I am far from being a specialist so I do not know all the technical terms, so it is easier for me to illustrate everything)

The first image shows the top of the motherboard. Changing U32 didn't bring any change, 3.0 still works.

For the green zone I don't know how to properly test this component but in continuity mode each pin is connected to the pin on the other side. For the comparison on a USB which works it is exactly the same thing so I consider that everything is OK at this level.

The fuse works and sounds good in continuity mode.

The second photo shows the underside of the motherboard.
On the USB pins apart from the ground pins nothing sounds in continuity mode.

3rd photo shows the overall status of the USB.

Can you guide me to resolve this issue? I remind you that this is a failure that often occurs on this model. Here is a thread on the lenovo forum raising the issue if it helps to better understand: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCe...ts/m-p/5109704

I would like to point out that the USB 2 port next to it works without problem. All options in the bios regarding the USB ports are activated. I have already tried to change the usb port itself on another machine of the same model with exactly the same symptom but that did not resolve the problem so im not doing it here.

    Thanks for your help

Highly recommend a Chipmunk USB tester if you can afford it. Tells you pretty quick what is going on. And the connections are exposed so you can just meter things while in situ.

Anyway, USB ports often go directly to the PCH without any protection other than an inline choke on the data lines. Sometimes you get lucky and it's either a connector or an open choke, but its often one of the data lines is damaged. Only solution usually is the PCH would have to be replaced. You buy a USB hub in that case or just live with it. Upload a link to the schematic and I can take a look.

Thank you for you answer. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a schematic for this motherboard. (MB : 22B1006-9)

Indeed, the D+ and D- lines are probably directly linked to the PCH but what I can't really understand is why there are so many of these machines which have exactly the same failure only on USB 1 while the USB port appears to be in very good condition on these machines.

          Hello,

Have you found a solution because I have the same problem on dozens of machines from the same joblot . That's almost half of my machines that have problems. What I noticed on certain machines is that the USB port works for a few moments when the PC starts up, then it deactivates. I don't think it's a physical port problem because it repeats itself on several machines. I have never encountered this problem on the M710q

          Thx

Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution to this problem. It's not a physical problem with the port because I changed the port and it was the same. In terms of updates, I tried everything without success. If I'm not mistaken, there are 2 m710q models with 2 slightly different motherboards. There is only one model that is problematic. Tell me if you ever manage to find the solution, I'm curious 😀
