    hp pavilion f70 backlight

The backlight on this thing cuts off and on until it gets to the welcome screen and then cuts off completely. I've decided to replace the caps on the board feeding the lights but the miserable truth is that I don't know how to identify them well enough to order them.

They're 16v, 220uf; 8mm wide, 8mm high. Green cover, marked LELON; 105 degrees. The esr is reading from .5 to .1.

There are 4 more caps, white plastic rectangles 8mm high, 7 wide and 3 deep. ESR is about 7ohms on these.

I know I should post a picture but don't have a digital camera_ which I guess I'm going to have to get at some point.

Try this so we get a better understanding of what is going on. Power off everything.

Hookup your computer to the LCD. Power up computer. Wait 2 minutes. Now turn on LCD.

    1) Does it show the display?
    2) Does the LCD go black after 1 or 2 seconds?
    3) Can you see the display if you shine a flashlight on it?
    4) Does the power LED stay green?

Appreciate the reply, retiredcaps. Did your test and you're right on. The desktop comes up briefly, screen goes dark and button yellow but the image is still there under a light. You're battin' a thousand so far!

Okay, depending on how long the desktop screen shows up, you could be experiencing 2 seconds to black. I'm in the process of updating this to version 0.2, but 0.1 is at

That'll give me something to work on for awhile! Who wants a simple life anyway!

I suspect I'm going to find out the same thing about lcds I found out when I was learning computers: its the ones which kick you around the block pulling your hair out which are the best to work on because they have something to teach you. And they do a great job of restoring a proper sense of humility!

Thanks for the great info; I'm going to work on it.

I totally agree. Troubleshooting hard problems is really challenging, but you learn a lot and I find it worthwhile for that knowledge.
