A couple days ago my Dell Dimension 4700 went black on me during a 13 hour leveling session in Warcraft. My first thought was my monitor had went out again as about 6 months ago I had to replace 2 capacitors inside that were bulging.
I rebooted and ran the computer another couple of hours and had a black screen again. After taking apart the case and spending about an hour cleaning all the dust bunnies out - I noticed 2 different caps were bulging and figure I have found the likely culprits.
I ordered the caps from MCM electronics but then stumbled upon this resource and the problem is I didn't know anything about low ESR so the ones that are in transit at the moment are standard of unknown manufacturer.
The two caps in question are:
6.3v 3300uf
6.3v 2200uf
My wife is having hotmail withdrawals and I'm wondering if putting them in until I can get the low ESR ones will likely work.
What are the side effects of not having low ESR caps?? Faster MTBF?? Random locks/BSOD?
I was trying to do this repair in the fastest way possible but it seems my lack of research killed that option. I'm in Missouri so I will in all likelyhood order some Rubycon from Topcat as shipping should be a breeze. The right wind conditions and a good pitching arm might get them here for free.
