Probably. This applies to Pre-2K windows. XP have no issues with ASPI layer as it was needed on old OSes and is usually for SCSI optical drives and scanners using a controller. I had dealt with this ASPI issues in past and it is certainly not on XP. It was on 98 and 2000. By the way ASPI driver was only licensed by Adaptec in old days and is was not freeware. Adaptec forced guy who made a package based on this software pulled off the 'net about decade ago.
Have you tried on borrowed machine with known GOOD optical drives? I liked LG drives. I'm talking about IDE or SATA to keep things more simple.
