Help identify HP Z800 DPS-850DB IC901
Hi all,
I have a HP Z800 with a defective PSU Delta DPS-850db (I bought it that way). First I would like to try to repair the PSU, but can't do this without any help.
There's no visible damage, except for a 6 pin IC in to220 housing, the whole front has blown out. Making it impossible to identify the chip. Sadly the blown of part(s) are nowhere to be found.
I'm hoping to find people who would could tell me t what kind of IC, IC901 is, it's mounted on an aluminum cooling bloc next to the 3 large capacitors. The silkscreen say's IC901.

HP Z800 Workstation - Schematics or help identifying capacitor / component value
Hi all,
My first post here for help - and I'm hoping someone here can help me..
My Z800 dual Xeon workstation has stopped posting. Just high fan spin on power up. I did a little digging about and found some electrolytic caps that were bulging and had leaked onto the board. I've replaced those and then discovered the remnants of what looked like another cap (SMD) had disintegrated on the board in the same part of the circuit. It looked like a cap but I have no way of knowing for sure, or what value it may have been as there was nothing left of it.
I...

Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
This is for my son's computer... got a really nice deal on a HP Z800 (12-core/48GB) for like $250 on eBay. It's been working great for a few months, but then started to randomly reset/reboot, and at times refuse to power on at all. When this happens, there's a audible "clicking" sound, like a relay switch sound. But, it's not consistent... some times the power supply works fine for weeks at a time. And then some times it runs into this resetting issue. Some times worse than others; one time it even failed it's own "BIST" (built-in self test) mechanism, which consists of pulling...

HP Z800 No post
I have a HP Z800 with dual Xeon CPUs that turns on, but does nothing after that. Removing the GPU and RAM gives no error code.. the only error I get is 3x beep when I remove the CPUs. I probed the bios with an oscilloscope and there is no activity at all, it basically gets never accessed.
Voltages seem to be all present, I dont see any shots on the board or anything visually that show some issue.
The workstation seem to have works fine till one day it just started with black screen and thats the situation I have at the moment.
I did reflash the bios...

Re: Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
It is.
But many video cards made in the last 10 years have switched to -sealed- sleeve bearing fans, where the locking c-washer is installed at the front of the fan and permanently closed with plastic. After this, the fan rotor is popped in and locked in place by the c-washer, thus making it impossible to take apart... well nearly. If you try to use just brute force, you'll break the fan. The method I found to work is to drill holes on the back of the fan to expose the shaft. Then heat shaft with soldering iron to 130-150C,...Last edited by momaka; 12-27-2020, 03:00 AM.

Re: Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
My old trusty Z800 started randomly shutting off with no warning. I assumed power supply problems and found this thread. I visibly checked all the caps, cleaned out a ton of dust, etc., to no avail. I did not want to start changing parts willy-nilly without knowing the cause.
Then, quite by accident (thanks to almost getting burned) I discovered that the graphic card was extremely hot. Its fan was very stiff and barely turning, probably either from wear or accumulation of fine dust within. At some temp it seems the system...

Re: Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
I am having the same problem. The supply Works on Higher Tempratures but fails on Low Tempratures. Changed Almost all the Capacitors but the Issue is still there.
Does anybody successfully resolved this issue ?
One More Question , Does DELL T5700 PSU will work with this using 24Pin to 18 Pin Connector ?

Re: Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
What spot do you need to heat for it to work?
I've recenty read on another forums that even things like glass SMD diodes in the auxiliary stand-by transformer winding which actually do power the driving ICs do go bad. As well as the ICs themselves. However, often in a manner it all appears fine with a meter, yet replacing it solves the problem! So like go look for such problems
I wonder, what the problem could be, like some micro-crack in the material of the component when it behaves as such?

Re: Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
This is an interesting mod that you did to this computer but why did you put the switching power supply in the front of the computer ( why not in the back of the computer )...Last edited by sam_sam_sam; 06-07-2020, 08:26 AM.

Re: Trying to repair a HP Z800 850W PSU by Delta
Thx @Curious.George for the detailed answer!
I totally forgot my post here. So I will try to give an short update to my Z800 PSU story.
After weighing up the risks I gave it a try with a conventionel PSU. I bought a 850W PSU from the japanese company Thermaltake. Removed the origininal PSU and all cables. Detailed manual in the Link of my first post.
Now to the problem where to place the PSU. I tried to put the PSU in front of the case. It is attached on a metal plate wich is connected with the Z800 tower....

Re: Ender 3D Printer but I am having problems with software help need
I recognize there's a limitation -- it's obvious from the printers I've seen at the local maker house. But, I've based that assessment on the overall size of the printer "cube", not a close examination of how much USABLE space can be accessed by the printhead.
[I'm more interested in playing with their laser cutter, presently, as I have some panels that I need to fabricate -- with odd shaped holes]
Ah! That's a good point! And a good realization...
