    ThinkPad E15 G4 PD Controller TPS65994AE EEPROM

Hi, I have a ThinkPad E15 G4 I am working on for fun, the PD chip is not talking to the charger, it's stuck at 5v, I have replaced the PD chip three times now (new chips) and always the same result, I have checked for shorts, correct voltages on the PD IC etc - 5v 3v, and the 1.6v on the cc lines, even replaced the USB C port protector IC and the charging port,

The PD IC has a EEPROM connected directly, it's the one in the image attached, I assume the PD chip will not start without some initial commands stored in the EEPROM, the PD IC never shows in device manager, i backed up the content of the chip and attached it, it doesnt look right to me and the bin is only 32k?

    Board is NM-E211
    SN - PF48263E
    MODEL - 21E60050UK

I do have another post here about this laptop, but thought this subject was best posted here, hope thats ok,

    Many Thanks,

I don`t think the version number should be that.. . Your dump is version 1.0.0.1 ,it has two firmwares in it sequentially. The second one has a few bytes that are different to the first. Why it has two and not one i don`t really know, i`m not sure if it`s supposed to be like that, if there should be only one or it`s corrupted.

Attached is new firmware for you to try, copied from the PD update and edited into your dump

Is the laptop running OK on the battery. If it is and the charge is above 25% you can try to install the PD firmware from the update executable https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/m...spd02w-web.exe

      Read the pre-conditions first though ! https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/m...pd02w-web.html

      Manual Update

Precondition: please install R1SET53W(1.24 )BIOS or above version first, otherwise cannot install this firmware.
1.Plug in the AC adapter into the ThinkPad E14 Gen4 Notebook.
2.Double click "r1spd02w_web.exe" to extract to the folder path C:\FW\WIN\PDFW.
3.The system will update type C PDFW after reboot.

      Note:

      - Do not insert any Type C device (Dock, Dongle ,Type C disk) when updating PDFW.
      - Do not close update tool when updating PDFW.
      - Please plug the adaptor to the system and keep battery higher than 25% when update PDFW, avoid failure.

Hi SMDFlea, huge thanks for the reply, yes, the laptop does charge and run fine but only charges at 5v 3 amps,
I tried what you suggested yesterday but will have another go today,
the main bios is the latest available as of yesterday, the PD firmware seems to install in windows, however when the computer restarts the firmware doesn't seem to install, just boots straight into windows,
is the bios supposed to interrupt boot to install the PD firmware similar to the main bios install?

Can you check which version you have now

Precondition: Confirm the system is at BIOS Version R1SET53W(1.24) or above before proceeding.
          1. Hold down the Windows logo key and press X to open a menu at the lower-left area of the screen.
          2. Select Device Manager from the menu.
          3. Double-click Firmware category.
          4. Double-click PD Firmware. (If PD Firmware is not found, check the other "Device Firmware" items.)
          5. Select the Firmware tab, 'Detail'->'Hardware Ids',677ee0c5-bedd-4116-ac65-056912e78a79.
          6. Check Firmware Version, 'REV_xxxx'.

I am having the same issue with a ThinkPad E15 Gen 4. Computer runs off battery but not drawing any power from the port. I replaced the port to no avail.

Which chip on the motherboard are you guys referring to? A picture or component code will work? Thanks

Hi trepachka, if your power supply is switching to 20v and measuring 0 amps current draw, it sounds like one of the mosfets that sit very close TPS65994 has become unsoldered due to excessive heat, I am no expert here but what i have learnt is the TPS65994 does not supply sufficient voltage to the gates of these mosfets (26 to 28 volts to ground) the mosfets do not fully conduct, become a virtual resistor and desolder themselves,
i'm not sure if the TPS can be fixed with firmware or if the boost converter contained within the TPS defective, on the board view for NM-E211 Rev 1.0 the controller chip is UB7 mosfets are QB5 and QB6 and the eeprom is UB9

                            hope this helps

Computer is drawing 5V 0A. Yes, I was referring to UB9. I will also transfer UB4 for good measure from a donor board. I will let you know what happens.
