• Re: Dell E198WFP Preventative Recap

Thank you friend for once again sharing your knowledge.

I totally forget about upping the cap's rated voltage to get longer life. And I forgot that you can't just go by the digikey rated life, you have to dig in to the data sheets and look at the size of the caps. You told me that, I've been out of this too long. I'm always in for a good puzzle and identifying the best replacement caps is a little bit of that. One day I'll get this down. I should start recapping everything in the house but alas my soldering skills are not the greatest...

First let me say thanks again to everyone who's helped. After mulling it over, here's what I'm planning on ordering to use for this preventive recap. Anyone have any final thoughts before I do?

That's Panny's FC product line. I'm not crazy about those especially on the rated hours and ESR/Ripple compared to the KZE I picked for the OST's 10uf 50V. Same story with the KY that 1supertech recommended to deal with that rogue 4.7uf 16V Teapo. I'm using FM/FR for everything else on the video board, which is top of the line so I'd like to try to stay in that category for everything, even if I have to go to other brands. I also know that the rated hours doesn't always mean a hill of beans, but the KZE & KY series caps are...

    For which?

Instead of the UCC KZE I picked for the OST one's?? Thought KZE was a recommended line. And neither YXG or ZL is available at digikey for 10uf 50v.

Same story for the 4.7uf rogue Tepco. No YXG or ZL available at digikey in that capacitance. The KY that 1supertech pointed out is on the recommended line.

    If there's better caps...

I would if I could but availability is the problem. For the PS, I found all FR caps. But the video board, nope. For example, this rogue 4.7uf 16V Teapo, that 1supertech found a good KY replacement, I looked at going Panny FR 4.7uf 50V which is EEUFR1H4R7. Only place that has that in stock is Farnell Element 14 in their UK stock. Minimum $20 to ship across the pond. Nope.

Or the bucketload of OST 10uf 50V caps I need. Panny FR equivalent is EEUFR1H100 and you guessed it, only place that has it in stock is Farnell...

Ahh, good catch. Totally forgot to look at that.

I forgot you could go up in voltage on a cap if you had to. TY for the reminder! I took another look at Digikey searching 4.7uf and anything over 16V and that appears to be the best long life cap available.

The only thing that concerns me though is that cap is not what I would think is a low ESR cap. It's specs are 1.9 Ohm and 88 Ripple. But I've got nothing to compare it to as the original cap doesn't seem to exist. I dug around some more on Teapo,...

Certainly I'll agree in some context's that if it ain't broken don't fix it. But this is the first time I'v heard of that analogy here. My understanding is that in alot of instances bad caps are just ticking timebombs and when they do blow, they can completely destory the device. And that is even more so relevant here (with displays) because when they blow they can take out other components that can be hard/impossible to replace. So I think it's certainly prudent that if you have the time and resources to do a prevantive recap...

  • Dell E198WFP Preventative Recap

    Howdy everyone,

After a long time away (was here a few years ago recapping some moboards and their power supplies), I'm back and finally going to get around to doing some preventive recaps on my monitors. I've got a bunch of Dell E198WFP's. They are on pretty much all the time, and would like to keep them going as long as possible, so thus the reason why I want to do a preventive recap on them.

I took a few long looks at budm's galleries and figured out how to get one of them apart. By the way Budm,...

  • Re: Dell Optiplex 780 SFF and AC235AS-00 PSU

So with the holidays, digikey having an "unexpected internal delay", and the weather; my order that I placed last Monday morning arrived Saturday. BAH! I understand the need to building a stash. The recap went smooth, well sort of lol. I got all the old ones out without many issue (I despise that damn glue stuff they use to hold em on). I'm loving this power supply in that the fan just unplugs from the board, instead of having to either solder it off or carefully keep it attached. The board has more room too, everything isn't...

So much good info, where to start! First ofcourse, many thanks mockingbird and momaka. I think i'm getting this. Sorry I'm just now getting back here, been a hectic week.

I understand what your saying now on the cap "tier's". You want to stay in the same "tier levels" as what your replacing. You can go to the high end, but your going to pay more and it may not be necessary. I'll confess though, I don't know that I'll ever get ESR ratings to memory But I did download and am slowly going...

mockingbird, thanks! And as you guessed it, I got more questions There is alot to learn!

I found that part now on page 1 in the datasheets under endurance. But I'm not sure what you mean about "get acquainted with the characteristics of each series by memorizing their typical features and deficiencies from datasheets. You should aim to be informed at least of the three tiers of caps." Do you mean the endurance? Or other specifics of the cap. And aren't all the caps I'm looking at...

    Momaka, thanks for the answers!

On ESR, I like your answer. As long as for my purposes of comparison it works, I'm rolling with it! I tried to find the post you mentioned from PCBONEZ but I couldn't find it.

So I was busy tonight. Think my eyes have gone crosseyed a few times. Someone mind taking another glance at this and make sure I did this right? My original data is there along with the ESR/Impedance & Ripple values from the datasheets and the new caps are listed to the right (Digikey #, Model...

mockingbird as always I appreciate all your knowledge and patience!

Great tip on the order extra's every time you place an order too, I've been thinking further ahead after I get done with all these PSU's and once I'm done with these comps should I start looking at my 3 dell flatscreens? I see tons of flatscreen problems in the other section of the forums, so now I'm somewhat spooked on that. But to the problems at hand....

I'm trying to wrap my brain around all of this, gone a little crosseyed at times...

So I'm thinking the next step for me is I should learn how to select the right caps for a recap.

I started in the FAQ's reading Capacitors in Computers, Capacitor ESR, The Bad Capacitor FAQ, and What capacitors should I buy....

Well glad to know the motherboard is fine. I don't like motherboard recapping's haha. Still learning, good to know United Chemicon KY's are good. They kinda puked KY's all over this board, I did not want to have to change all of them!

I kinda figured you were going to say recap the PSU. CapXon equals crapcon from what I've found round these parts

    Here's my diagram:

Happy to pay it back and contribute any way I can. I learned a hard lesson on this board, so if someone else can learn from it, all the better.

Good to know on the KY's and KZE's too, thank you! Got a lot to learn on which are good and which aren't.

  • Dell Optiplex 780 SFF and AC235AS-00 PSU

    Hey everyone,

So I know I'm working on my GX620's in another thread, however we just got a used Optiplex 780 SFF C2D Quad that we're going to start using (and probably stressing) a good bit, so before we put it in to service, I figured I better have a look inside.

The motherboard has the following caps I've identified.
    Big ones in the middle: 1800uf 6.3V 105°C FL [M] 05IIEY
    Everywhere: 470uf 6.3V KY (M) 105°C
    Sporadically scattered: 120uf 16V 105°C FM [M]
    Between the ram: Rubycon 1000uf 6.3V A1023 105°C PET
    Oddball in the bottom...

So even though I'm not going to be recapping the H275P because of the evil VIA's (I know my fault ) I thought I'd share my research in case someone else can find it useful.

Here's pics I took of the board:

    Here's the diagram I made:

And here's a listing of all the info I gathered on the caps:

  • Re: Dell GX 620 Motherboard Recap

Thanks! I ordered that iron and splurged on the $3 more for the epacket delivery so it's not February before it's delivered. Still will probably be January. I also ordered a N275P from flebay to go with the one I have and 2 sets of caps from digikey. I'll post back when I get all the stuff here.

If it's January before I return, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!...

I'm game, got a specific auction? I see a ton of them when I search for 60W soldering irons. I do hope it's my technique though and not this brand new hakko station, that would seriously tick me off. Well that and those damn VIA's. I may get good at this yet....
