  • Re: Remember the Vacuum Tube Era

My first TV repair was at age 14 and my father had bought a b/w console that lasted six months and quit. He moved it to the back porch and said "enough with that" and later I asked if I could have it and he said "sure.. just don't bring it back into the house. " I did bring it to my room upstairs (with help from my brother) and we kept it secret. I fixed it by looking inside and seeing one tube that was glowing blue while the others were amber. I went to the grocery story and they had a tube tester/seller and I got a replacement...

That looks like the Zsus board.. (the one to the right of the Power supply as you're looking at the back of the set. I know when I unplug power to the Zsus.. the picture looks dim and distorted like that.

  • Re: Vizio Tuner Cards DTV

Thanks for that info Cliff.. I have 3 of the 187's that are not working. When I try to bring up the menu when the input is selecting DTV, the menu doesn't come up and the TV hangs... I sure would like to know what's causing it. All the voltage regulators are running fine on all three boards. Must be one of the ASIC's or the flash parts..

It's just that Ysus and Buffer boards are marked with the "A" suffix to indicate that they came from the 50X4A version of the panel verses 50X4.

I think I have a working set of 50X4 buffer boards that I could try with the 50X4A Y-Sus.
The orig 50X4 Y-sus was blown out when the caps went bad on the main power supply....

    Tom, That's very interesting.
The panel didn't have any sparkling issues when it was built will the full set of 10A boards. It seems only since I put in the YSus and Buffer boards from the 20A in it that it's got the sparkling issues.
I am using these 20A part in it because the 20A set had a vertical line that rendered that panel useless and the 10A TV had a blown up Y_sus boards. ( I borrowed the Y_Sus and drivers from a working 10A set to verify that there were no sparkling issues).

    So.. It would seem that...

Ok.. that makes sense... I had another 10A that had a bad Y-sus board (and possibly buffer boards) so I put in the Ysus and Buffers from the 20A into that unit and it powers up with a menu but has red sparkles that tweaking setup on the Ysus just won't get rid of. Also, when I use the "wipe screen" feature, the sweep really is messed up with colors. I've still got to check the High voltages but this p/s and all the other boards had worked well in their respective machines before the switch over.

Not sure what the equivalent of the "Logic" board is on the Vizio. The "Ctrl" seems to provide all the timing for the PDP and the "Main board" is the one the processes the digital video inputs and formats them for display on the PDP though the "Ctrl" board.

I wound up with everything from the 20A on the 10A panel except the driver boards on the bottom (XR,XC,XL). Everything wired up fine but when I turned it on it was just a blank display. No sparks or funny colors on the screen....

Do you mean to keep the control board to match the driver boards or the rest of the electronics? My plan was to change over everything from the 20A to the 10A Panel except to leave the 3 driver boards from the 10A attached.

    So it's like this

Z, Y, Control, Main, power supply from the 20a
Panel and L,C,R driver boards from the 10a....

The driver boards connection to the control board is the same between the two sets. Do you think it could possibly work? to use the guts of the Vizio 20A with the 10A panel and buffer boards?

  • Re: Vizio P50HDTV20A Single Vertical Red Line

I have 2 more panels but they are from a P50HDTV10A. They are the same panels but these driver boards seem to be laid out differently but have the same connections.

After quite a bit of work I realize the panels are NOT the same. I had the idea that the only difference between the 10A and the 20A were that the boards were updated and there was a firmware change. I guess I need to look to see if the resolution is different....

  • Vizio P50HDTV20A Single Vertical Red Line

I have a new set that I'm working on with this single vertical red line that is always there. I had the idea that it was from the boards at the bottom of the set and possibly could be those flex cables just not making contact or the panel was bad. I had a panel around from a P50HDTV10A with those boards already in it so I moved all the other boards over to it but it didn't seem to work. I think those driver boards are different between the two sets. I ended up moving all the boards back to the original TV and though I would try a few more things and maybe ask for help.

    Is it most...

  • Re: Bad Cap Collection

Bud, I see you use the hand held solder sucker. I love those. When I've watched youtube videos online I don't see many folks using them.

A couple weeks worth of work. Several folks had asked me how to tell if a cap had gone bad. Often it's pretty easy to tell....

  • Vizio Tuner Cards DTV

I'm looking to buy a replacement tuner board for a Vizio P50HDTV10A. I see that the Vizio 3646-0012-0190 Tuner Board 0171-1472-0355 which is for a different model looks identical but the flash device has a different label. Does anyone have experience with these as being interchangeable?

  • Re: Vizio P50 HDTV20A

The caps on the PS look ok? I think I've yet to see one of these P50 sets that doesn't have some puffed up caps on the power supply. I'd still start out by checking the voltages to the panel.

  • Re: Samsung FPT5084 50" Plasma - Randomly shuts off

I found the problem! There's a thermal sensor attached to the end of the heat sink on the main power supply and it was causing the power supply to shut down because the heat sink was too hot. I removed the top of the heat sink and reapplied thermal compound and tightened up the screens holding it in place and now it runs great. I used the heat gun moving slowly around the set 'till I found the spot that was sensitive and then narrowed in on it from there.

  • Re: Samsung FPT5084 50" Plasma - Randomly shuts off

Looked for cold solder joints but nothing like that on the PS.. I tried the heat gun but nothing definitive at all. I found that if I unplug the Y and Z boards I can still get sound so I'm taking those one at a time to see if the thing powers off with each of those boards unplugged in turn.

  • Re: Samsung FPT5084 50" Plasma - Randomly shuts off

Yes, I figured that would be the next thing to do. Without a microscope I'm not sure how I would examine all the surface mount components on the back. My plan is to use the heat gun on the boards and see if I can get it to switch off quicker. Currently it takes a couple hours before it shuts itself off.

  • Samsung FPT5084 50" Plasma - Randomly shuts off

Working on the Samsung and can't really see any bad caps on the main power supply so I'm looking elsewhere for issues. I even pulled out one of the 2200uf 10v caps to test it and it was fine.
When it clicks off, it does the red-light dance and needs to be unplugged from the AC and plugged back in.
Any clues or experience with this model

  • Re: Vizio P42HDTV10A: no picture, no sound

Did you figure out anything on this yet? Did you ever see the message.. "Going into deep sleep"? That's a message I got when there was no input present. I've got a couple of DTV cards that also don't have the DTV menu and one that just makes a blank screen. I had a good one that when I put that in the set, it works fine.
