• Re: Bad Antec experience, need a new PSU

Update on the Antec RMA drama... faxed over the receipt as requested and never heard back from them. Called. No callback. Been too busy at work to follow up again.
I retract my earlier statement that they are shaping up. They are bastards again. :-)

Yeah... you're right of course. But I would need to get a proper soldering iron. The one I have works for speaker wire and plumbing but I don't think I would touch it to my computer. Then I have to learn how to electronic solder again. That last time I did was around 1989 when I was in grade 9 electronics class.
... and I need to actually get the replacement caps.
At some point I do want to do it... but right now I want to put Antec to some expense for scamming me with this piece of crap in the first place.

Well I called the customer support line instead of the RMA line. The guy says he replied to my web form I filled out weeks ago. Checked my spam folder - it's not there. I don't think he's lying to me tho so I guess Antec is not quite as bad as I said. It still doesn't excuse the RMA dept for not answering the phone or returning my voice mails tho. About two minutes after my conversation with the CSR the RMA dept finally returned my call. Not a coincidence I'm sure.

Antec needs to pick up the frackin phone! I've been filling out the RMA form on thier website every week since I made that post trying to get an RMA number - nothing.
I call thier RMA line during business hours - they don't pickup.
I leave a voice mail - they don't call back.

TopCat - tell your buddy at Antec that for every customer they pick up advertising on your site THEY ARE DRIVING ONE AWAY WITH THIS INFURIATING NONSENSE.

Low end caps in their high-end products? Won't even answer the phone...

...think I have my answer...
Looking in the grille at the back of the PS I see this:

http://agraham.ca/shared/antec_phantom_500_badcap_large.JPG

I assume that's cap scum and not glue on that purple cap.

So should I get this thing recapped and keep it or buy a new one with the recommended 35A 5V rail?

Goddamn.. I spent $238 on this power supply because it got reviews and it's so fricken heavy and huge and annodized and silent I assumed it would be rock solid...

I have an Antec Phantom 500 that I bought in mid 2005. Do you think it might be bad?
I'm also not sure if it's actually big enough to run my system.
I've been having stability problems with my computer lately. I assumed it was the ASUS A8R-MVP mobo because I borrowed a power supply from work and the computer still was not stable but now I'm wondering if the PS from work was also too small.
Here's what ASUS had to say about PS:
...
Power is another issue that can cause instability to occur, as there are...

• Re: buzzing noise from MOBO

Try disconnecting the bleeper. I get the same thing through my onboard sound system. It was annoying enough that I spent $ on a sound card even though the onboard sound had all the features I needed.

• Re: Best mobo brand?

My use is I guess you would say general purpose. Some programming when I take my work home with me. Some gaming because I only like FPSing with the mouse. A tivo box / torrent box so it has to run cool and silent all the time.
I've haven't done any overclocking since back in the Celron 300A days so I wouldn't go out of my way for that although of course I don't mind if the options are there either.
I will add ABit to my mental list of "respectable" brands.

• Re: Asus C90P issues

That sucks. Hey maybe if you sent it back under a new trouble ticket that mentions the fan problem and no other issues they would fix it.

• Re: Best mobo brand?

For me fan control / silence is paramount. Must be all passive (except CPU of course) and offer three controllable fans. My previous mobo was an ACER which I bought because it had this particular monitoring/fan control chip (that the specs advertised), but when I got it the fan control lines weren't hooked up. I sent it for waranty repair and they just said it back saying fan control was not in the design. That's when I swore I would never buy another ACER product after that bait-and-switch and went to ASUS based on what people were saying at the time... Anyway...

Oh crappy. My ASUS A8R-MVP mobo is covered with KZGs and some of them are nestled right right up to the heatsink that covers those little regulator chips next to the CPU.

Best mobo brand?

I've always tended to buy ASUS gear, but I'm getting the feeling they don't make the best stuff after all. I'm not sure where I got the idea that they were so good in the first place.
What are the opinions about which mobo and video card brands are the best for general quality?

• Re: Firefox and Broadband users, READ THIS!!

Why wouldn't you? You want enough connections to saturate your downlink. Any less and you're leaving bandwidth on the table. Any more and you're delaying your rendering because assets are blocking each other from downloading. That number's going to be different for everyone based on their pipe and their average throughput to different sites....

Interesting.. was just reading in the FAQ:

The caps on this video card are backwards from the silkscreen. I wonder if they popped from being installed backwards or if the silkscreen is just wrong?

Newb question: I want to test if they're in backwards with a volt meter. Can just touch the probes to the two solder points for one of the caps on the back of the board? Should I touch neg probe to neg lead (neg on the cap that is, not the silkscreen)? What should I see if they installed correctly (but blown). What should...

Yeah actually all four of them are bulging equally, you just can't tell because they're out of focus. That, and the respectable brand made me think "well maybe they're supposed to look like that". But I guess not. :-)

• Are these caps bad? *pic*

My mobo (ASUS A8R-MVP bought in mid '06) has been very unstable the last few months. I switched all the components and it's still crashing. I looked at all the caps and they all look good as far as I can tell. Looking at the original video card the caps look bulgy on the top. Is it possible the video card has bad caps and damaged the mobo?

Here's pics of the video card caps (it's an ASUS EN6600 Silencer).
The caps are labelled KZG which according to https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=425 means they are United Chemicon and should be good quality....
