  • Re: The Future of the Desktop PC

If people what something that small, I recommend them to use an Andriod mini PC for under $50 brand new. Great for occasional use users and older people that require it only for surfing the net and emails ...plus it blows away a PC if they want to use XBMC for free first run movies ...I use mine daily, pays for itself in less than a week !

This was a 1st generation device back in July 2012, These mini PCs are now the 5th generation with quad core and 2GB of RAM:

  • Re: reflow flux and other shit

It is more complicated than that, 10 years is not a lot of field data and even accelerated testing only simulates it up to 20 years. LF solder also requires higher temperature in the vicinity of 225-235DegC to wet properly which then increases the chance of component damage for RoHS specified components which are designed to withstand 250DegC bake temperature. In most production lines the reflow oven temperature is cranked up to 240DegC sometimes because of difficulties in good wetting. LF is "alright" for Class 1 consumer...

Actually those plants were in North America, but I can say the EMS plants in China are more advance and the workers have better workmanship practices than in Mexico, US and Canada !

These are just one of 100s and 1000s of typical small EMS companies in China today, I am impressed with their workmanship practices, it puts the largest multinational North-American EMSes like Flextronic, Sanmina-SCI and Celestica to shame on what you can do with a small budget !

Smart buy, the Hakko clones from Aoyue are awesome ! ...hehe
The Hakko 936 is still the best home soldering station for the money !...

  • Re: reflow flux and other shit

You have to know what was the original solder that was used, lead or lead free before you can determine the type of flux to use ! Most consumer electronic products are now RoHS if they are to be sold in Europe, RoHS solder is a horrendous nightmare and probably accounts for 80% of the defects we see in electronics today, God forbids if we are going to start seeing planes falling from the skies in a couple of years !

I know for a fact that Airbus and Alstrom uses RoHs solders in their planes while NASA and Boeing still does not, we should...

    You have a Metcal ?

Perhaps with only one user, but imagine 2000+ people soldering in a huge plant ! I have seen just about every crazy thing the electronics industry has to offer, twice the flux in a batch of solder was bad if I recall was the Multicore brand which is now owned by Loctite, workers were nauseating and fainting, we had to evacuate the plant twice in 4 years. Loctite sent their people and never figured out what was wrong with their rolls of solder. Sometimes I wonder what crazy formulas of flux...

We used that product in our plants, my concern is that it emits toxic fumes which I think is worse than no-clean rosin flux !
In the end I just had them use expired solder paste we had lying around ready to go into the garbage !...

Close cellulose sponges are best, but the problem is that most people over saturate it with water and the moment the tip touches it the tip temperature goes down and then they turn up the temperature resulting in overheating the tip. The sponge should be only damp, not dripping with water, this is the first thing I check when I visit EMS plants to see if they know their stuff and practice good workmanship procedures !...

  • Re: help needed with rosin flux removal!

You can make sure if there is indeed conformal coating by shining a UV light(black light), the coating will give a whitish color on the PCB.

I find it strange that low cost items such as consumer grade motherboards have conformal coatings which is normally for mission critical hardware applications.

For tough flux residues I use lacquer thinner it is cheap and available everywhere, but be careful it may melt certain plastic components.

Be sure it is not conformal coating that is lifting off, big difference if it is the actual epoxy on the PCB !

  • Re: Solder Tip Tinner question.

Just tin the tip with solder it is still the best, all those tip tinning products is basically a thicker version of solder paste. Most soldering tip these days are plated, the problem is that most users over heat their tips or remove the plating with Scotch Brite or other abrasive products and the tip starts to oxidize.
