Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
You've got exceptionally good eyes spotting that dried liquid from the photo I posted
I'm not 100% sure but it looked like flux. The mark on top of the chip was red pen / red marker pen. It all came off with some rubbing alcohol and a few cotton buds.
I'm going to try and hunt down a new ribbon cable due to the sharp creases in the current one. If I can find a replacement board cheap enough then I'll pick one up but I'll start with the ribbon cable.
Alas, if I can find one it will probably...

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
Good observation and I can see what you mean from looking at the image. The machine is packed away at the moment but I'll pull it back out tomorrow after work and clarify what you pointed out

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
Nothing on either the connector on the board, or on or around the power button. None of the micro components on the board either.
I checked the connector other end of the ribbon cable where it connects to the motherboard. Some of the pins on the edge of the connector show about 1.3v.

Nothing at all unfortunately. Nothing around the power sensor, the LED or anywhere else on the board for that matter.

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
So you want me to probe each point where the white connector is on the photo of the board you posted [I think it's called the 'Hotkey board'? Just probe the different points 2 at a time?
Should I do it with the charger connected to the motherboard, ribbon cable between the motherboard and the Hotkey Board connected?
The DC jack you linked to looks like it's for a different motherboard, one where the DC jack is soldered straight onto the board.
Mine is more like this - [url]http://www.laptopinventory.com/ModelDetail.php/Alienware/Area%2051/M17X-R1/DC%20Jack/4131[/url]...

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
These are the best two photos I have of the power button. There is normally a plastic alien head button that goes over the point in the middle. Specifically its the cluster of components and an LED in the middle, just above the white semi circle in the middle of the two holes.
I can't remember fully which LED it was when this was working, possibly the LED marked 'Alienware' in the third pic which lights up when the charger is connected to signify that the machine has power. Alas, it doesn't light up at the moment....

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
I'll dig out my tape and cover the back of the DC jack as suggested.
I've tested the probes on each of the wires going into the white connector.
Red Probe > Red Wire
Black Probe > Black Wire
Each wire across the connector reads between 19.6 to 19.7v.

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
Morning mate
I've taken some photos this morning. The weather isn't showing any signs of brightening up so I bit the bullet and tried to take some photos underneath a light. They haven't come out fantastic as my Nexus 4 isn't always very good for macro shots. I can try again with my son's iPhone when he gets up if you can't see things very well.
I've taken a few photos of the DC jack, front and back, plus where the cable plugs into the motherboard. Also, there's quite a few shots of the Hotkey Power Board, and there...

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
That's right Looks lovely in the dark. It spans different colors from left to right although it can be fixed at a single color when the original Alienware software works [which it didn't under Windows 7 64-Bit].
It's an official Dell PA-4E, 19.5v which I was told was a supported charger. It ran fine with one of these. With a different Dell charger the CPU wouldn't run at full speed. With the PA-4E charger the machine ran beautifully, perfect for watching movies and for gaming on. As I said the...

Re: Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
Thanks for your reply.
I'll do it first job tomorrow morning in the daylight so the flash isn't dazzling the shots
I'm trying to do a bit more of a background search on it with it being a few years old. It looks as though its an 'Area 51 M17x R1'.

Alienware M17x R1 - No Power LED
I have the above machine which I rescued from certain death last year. Following a clean up and a new charger its been working fine for months and has been a great machine!
However, it no longer powers on. The alien head power on button wasn't lighting up to acknowledge that the charger was connected. I tested another charged which highlighted it wasn't related to that and made me lean more towards the machine itself.
I've stripped the machine and given it a gentle but decent clean so its free from dust and I've started by looking at the DC in jack. On previous machines...

Re: Baird x37DTV - No Power
Many thanks to both of you for your help and advice, it's been really interesting so far
I'll take a look at that kit and then see if I can identify where those components are on the board. I may need to come back to you to ask how to test them but there really is no rush. Chances are I won't have an opportunity to look at it again for a couple of days as my Mrs will have other plans for what I do with my spare time this weekend

Re: Baird x37DTV - No Power
Ok, [just so I understand this], the fuse is dead because of another component that is faulty so it's a case of tracking down the other faulty component[s] before swapping the fuse or putting together a shopping list?

Re: Baird x37DTV - No Power
When I set the DMM to that setting it displays a 1 on the screen. When I probe the fuse the screen on the DMM stays at 1.

Re: Baird x37DTV - No Power
Ok, from the back, the trace goes down and to the left slightly.
From the front, looking at L and going down and over to the right we have a component in what looks live black sleeving.
With the sleeving carefully removed it does indeed look like a fuse. It looks like it says 32S around the top. Looking inside the fuse I can' really see the filament properly, whatever is inside it looks red or brown with some wires. I'll remove it from the board and have a proper look - I work in IT and Root Cause is everything

I've done that and it floats between 241 and 242.

Re: Baird x37DTV - No Power
I've had a look around for the Fuse, FET and PFC IC that Tom66 suggested earlier.
I can't see anything that looks like a fuse anywhere. There are a number of FETs screwed onto the heatskins, some large, some small.
From top to bottom, left to right:-
- Large 4 pin, nothing printed on it
- Small 3 pin, CQ721G, U1560
- Small 3 pin, something printed but very faded
- Small 3 pin, IRFP460 - P728XD - MIDD
- Large 4 pin, nothing printed on it
- Small 3 pin, NXP, BYQ28E...

Re: Baird x37DTV - No Power
The mains lead plugs into the underside of the Tv, then there's the earth screwed to the chassis, then the blue [marked N] and brown [marked L] that plug into the mainboard.
Pin 1 [N] - 0.00v
Pin 2 [L] - -0.64 up to 0.64 and then back to -0.64
[Edit]
Sorry, I read your post wrong!
I've attached a photo of the area I think your telling me to look at.
If that's the case then I'm not getting any reading from the pins.
