  • Re: Dell Inspiron N5110 No LED backlight

I didn't realize the model when I posted yesterday. I have probably seen a dozen of this particular model with a dim backlight caused by the LCD cable being slightly unseated at the motherboard. Before you buy replacement parts I would highly suggest that you take the palmrest off and re-seat the cable.

The LCD cable doesn't have any slack on this model and the rocking off opening the LCD over and over tends so unseat them quite a bit. I'll attach a picture of it in its native habitat. If you re-seat it and it works, I "kapton...

  • Re: Dell Inspiron N5110 No LED backlight

The N5110 doesn't have an inverter board, so it's either the panel or motherboard (can also be cable, but is rare). If you turn the system off and hold down the "D" key on the keyboard while powering the system back on, the LCD BIST will run and test the LCD independent of the video controller. If you see the same result the panel is bad.

  • Substituting a 6.3v in place of a 10v cap?

I have a friend with a computer mainboard, with a blown 10v 3300uf. I know that it's ok to go up in voltage, but you should usually not go down. However, mainboards only have 3 voltages - 3, 5, and 12, right? So I'm thinking that the 10v has to be used for either a 3 or 5 volt line, and 6.3v cap will work fine..I have some 6.3v 3300uf on hand is why I am wanting to do this.

Am I flawed in my thoughts about this?

  • VP6 Power Supply Issues

So I bought another vp6 off of Ebay. I get it installed and windows loaded up, and I keep getting "Machine Check Exception" blue screens. I did a lot of troubleshooting that finally lead me to the PS. I used this PS for my old vp6 for years without problems. However, I noticed that it was a single rail 12v. I loaded up motherboard monitor and all 3 voltages were running too low. The 12v was running around 11.89 consistantly. I put my multimeter on it, and got the same results as motherboard monitor.

So new Antec SP400 dual rail installed. The 12v for peripherals is now...

  • Another Abit Board Down

Abit Bh6 this time...This completes the cycle all 4 abit boards I have purchased over the past years have officially died from bad caps now. I have a few questions once again:

    1. This board was 6 or 7 years old. (Question)So, what is the general lifespan of well manufactured caps? Is 6-7 years about right?

    2. This system was working fine yesturday. My home lost power last night two or three times for about 30 seconds each time. When I finally powered the system back up afterwords it would reboot trying to load windows. That's when I pulled the side panel off and...

Yes, I'm using new anatec 3 speed fans for both intake, and exhaust(both are switched on to high speed).

Funny thing, my last two lockup scenarios last night had to do with the mouse. So I pulled the usb mouse I was using, and installed a ps2 version. The system has been running stable since. I will need to do some more testing to verify this as a fix, but so far it is looking good.

I'm hoping the video card fans I've been burning through are just low quality fans as some of you have suggested.

  • Abit vp6

Typical bad cap syndrome...I sent the board back to abit over a year ago not knowing anything about bad caps, just as a defective board. They sent it back to me un-repaired saying they couldn't find a problem with it. Several months later I stumbled onto this website from an ebay auction, and realized that bad caps were the problem. Abit issued me an rma for $25 or something like that with the caveat that it would take a while to get a replacement.

Eight months later I figured they had long enough and tried to contact them about the status. I still have the rma number, but emails,...

started a topic Abit bd7II Raid

    Abit bd7II Raid

I have been using this board for years, and started having very erratic problems in the past weeks. It seems to mostly have to do with video, though I'm not absolutely sure about that. I started getting "blue screens of death" referencing a video driver file a week or so ago. When I took my case panel off to investigate I was met with the product of a small space heater. The power supply was barely touchable. It was a cheap stock power supply so I immediately replaced it as the obvious culprit. That seemed to work for a day or two, and then the blue screens came back. I take the case...
